RIOJA ALAVESA
The Rioja Alavesa is situated to the west of Logrono and on the northern side of the river Ebro. The soils are very chalky and the wines are perhaps the lightest of the Rioja region. Tempranillo is the dominant grape variety.
RIOJA ALTA
The Rioja Alta is to the west of Logrono on the south side of the river Ebro. Many of the major bodegas (wine-producing companies) are location in La Rioja Alta - particularly around the town of Haro. Wines from this area provide the backbone of most blends, being full of body and color.
RIOJA BAJA
The Rioja Baja is situated mainly on the south bank of the Ebro downstream from Logrono. The dominant grape variety is Garnacha which gives coarser, early maturing wines.
