| Los Altos 9, Garey 8 (8 Innings) | ||||||
| It sure wasn't pretty, but we'll take it. Despite making a season-high 8 errors on the day, the Conquerors were somehow able to come out on top with a victory against Garey High School. This game was absolutely critical for Los Altos to stay alive in the race to win the Miramonte League championship, as they improved their record to 5-3. Junior Daniel Sandello made the start on the day, but failed to make it past the 3rd inning. No matter. Senior Jeff Varela and sophomore Jesus Sanchez came in to shut Garey down, holding them to one hit throughout the next 5 1/3 innings of play. Garey had a 5-3 lead going into the top of the 6th inning, when the LA rally monkey decided to make an appearance to the game. Junior Mike Ahumada (SS-CF-2B today) led off the inning with a walk and a stolen base. Sandello then scored Ahumada from second with a basehit and then advanced to second base on the throw home. Despite striking out, Junior Matt Chambers found his way to first base. Both Chambers and Sandello moved up one base on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by senior Jason Estrada and a botched groundball hit from Jesus "Adrian Beltre" Rivera. Romero added an important run with an RBI double down the left-field line. In the 7th inning, sophomore Adrian Cota scored on another RBI base-hit from Sandello to give the Conquerors a 3-run lead. And then it almost fell apart for Los Altos in the bottom of the 7th inning. Woody Thomas reached base on an error by sophomore Josh Cortez. Cheo Ibarra reached base on an error by first baseman Matt Chambers. Then, after a basehit, a throwing error by Romero and Cota put the tying run at third base. A groundout to Cortez put Garey at 8 runs. In the top of the 8th inning, Rivera led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a passed ball. After a Romero walk, Varela laid down a picturesque sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. With two out, Ahumada drove in his long-time buddy, Rivera, home from third base to give the Conquerors a 9-8 lead. Closer/DH Jesus Sanchez came in the bottom of the 8th inning and ended the game out in a Gagne-esque 1-2-3 fashion, as he recorded the first save on the year for the Conqeurors. |
