Charter Oak 5, Los Altos 1
The Conquerors suffered its first league defeat against Charter Oak
today.  Despite having an overall record of 3-6, the Chargers now have the
same league record as the Conquerors at 2-1.

Despite only getting 6 hits on the day, the Chargers were able to
string together the first two runs on consecutive basehits, aggressive
baserunning and fundamental hitting.  In the fourth inning, the Chargers led
off the game with back-to-back singles.  A well-executed double steal
combined with a Conqueror error gave the Chargers the only two runs that
it would need in the game.

In the 6th inning, the Chargers were able to score some insurance runs
on Junior pitcher Daniel Sandello.  It looked like Sandello was going
to get himself out of a 0 out, bases-loaded jam, but he wasn't able to
pull it off.  After striking out Johnny Contreras and Michael Gelfuso,
centerfielder Michael Gelfuso cleared the bases with a double to left
field, giving the Chargers a commanding 5-0 cushion.

On a positive note, Sandello did strike out 8 batters on the day.  He
was saddled with his first loss of the year, as he fell to 3-1.

The Conquerors actually outhit the Chargers, notching 8 basehits on the
day.  The difference was that pitcher Erik Vandenakker did a good job
in spreading out the baserunners.  Los Altos got a basehit in every
inning of play, but only scored once in the final frame when catcher Mario
Romero drove in pitcher/pinch-hitter/excellent scorekeeper Jesus
Sanchez, who lumbered in from second base after hitting his first double of
the year.

Despite the loss, Sunny Simmons remains optimistic.  "I think we simply
need to make some minor adjustments at the plate," Simmons commented,
"We've certainly got the requisite talent needed to win, but we need
more timely hitting. It's as simple as that."

The Conquerors return to action against Wilson High School on Friday at
3:15 PM  at Wilson.
