| Junior Daniel Sandello narrowly missed pitching a no-hitter for Los Altos in its first league game of the year. After a long flyball out to left field for the first out of the 7th inning, first baseman Ricky Rodriguez blooped a dying quail to center field that popped in and out of the gloves of centerfielder Max Nazaroff and shortstop Mike Ahumada. Like a supply and demand curve, the Russian Rocket and Yahoomada came crashing at an equilibrium point, but both were unable to come up with the ball. In 7 innings of work, Sandello (2-0) struck out 9 batters. Although walking 4 batters and hitting 2 Bonita players, Sandello said it was all part of his overall strategy that he devised prior to the game. I wanted to make sure that the guys werent hanging over the plate, Sandello said. Sure, I missed the plate by 10 feet once in awhile and beaned a couple of guys, but the opportunity cost of not throwing like I did would have been too high. The offensive star of the game was rightfielder Jason Estrada, going 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs. He barely missed hitting for the cycle, as he hit a triple in the 2nd, single in the 3rd and double in the 5th inning (The double being in quotation marks because the double actually landed over the fence in rightfield on the fly). Ahumada also had a nice day at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a double, sacrifice bunt and a stolen base. |
