| In an extra-innings thriller, the Conquerors were simply unable to come up with a victory. Walnut edged Los Altos by a score of 7-6 in 8 innings of play. Los Altos started the game off shaky. After a scoreless first inning, starter Jason Estrada got wild, walking four batters in the second inning. A costly error by Los Altos allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate. After giving up another run in the third inning, Estrada was relieved by Jeff Varela, making his 3rd appearance out of the bullpen. Los Altos got on the board in the 4th inning after Daniel Sandello launched a triple into left-center field. Sandello scored on an RBI groundout by Matt Chambers. The Conquerors exploded with 5 runs in the sixth inning. Adrian "Mota" Cota led the inning off with a walk. After a bunt single was called back due to a balk, Jeff Varela nonetheless managed to get on base on another perfectly executed bunt play. Jesus Rivera drove in Cota on a basehit to leftfield. After a Sandello force out, Estrada cleared the bases with a double to give the Conquerors a two-run advantage. It looked as if Varela would pick up his 3rd victory coming in from the bullpen, but he could not close the door in the bottom of the 7th inning. After making the first out, two consecutive errors followed by a wild pitch put the tying run at second base. Sure enough, second baseman Chris Waite blooped a single down the rightfield line to tie the game at four. (A positive note: Varela has yet to give up an earned run in 11 innings of relief.) After a nondescript top of the 8th inning for the Conquerors, Walnut strung together two walks and an excuse-me basehit to shallow leftfield to give Walnut a 7-6 victory. |
