| Jeff Varela returned to the Los Altos lineup after a bout with meningitis that sidelined him for the weekends games. Varela, who started the game off as the DH, made an impact with his bat and then came in and vultured the victory from starting pitcher Jason Estrada. When asked if he was mentally prepared for the game today, Varela simply retorted, Fo shizzle. In the top of the first inning, leadoff hitter Jesus Rivera drew a walk and scored on a throwing error from second base after Daniel Sandello stole second base. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lancers came back and tied the game up on an unearned run. Sunny Hillls increased the lead to 3-1 in the bottom half of the second inning on a homerun by catcher Warner. The Conquerors came roaring back with 5 more runs in the top of the 3rd inning. Rivera belted his team-leading 3rd double to start off the inning. Sophomore Adrian Cota singled, and Sandello followed with an RBI groundout. Chambers extended the inning with a shot up the middle, and Varela brought in 2 runs with a Texas-leaguer to right field. Catcher Josh Cortez blooped a single to right field and drove in 2 runs for his team-leading 5th RBI. There was no more scoring until the 7th inning when Varela reached base on an error, Ahumada doubled down the left field line and Cortez was intentionally walked. That set the stage for Junior Eddie Tomsio. Working deep into the count, Tomsio ripped a shot in the left-center alley and drove in 2 runs. Cortez scored and Tomsio took third on the centerfielders fielding error. Tomsio used his Wheels to motor in and score the 10th and final run of the game on a wild pitch. Although not officially credited with the save, Tomsio essentially closed out the game with his timely hitting. Jesus Sanchez (no relation the Marlins southpaw) came in and pitched the final inning of relief, allowing no hits and striking out a batter. |
