Acts and Resolutions
of the First Session of the Provisional Congress
of the Confederate States,
Held at Montgomery, ALA.
No. 56.] A RESOLUTION
To continue the Mints at New Orleans and Dahlonega.
The Congress of the Confederate States of America do resolve,
That the mints at New Orleans and Dahlonega shall be continued,
and the proper arrangements made as soon as possible to procure
suitable dies for the coin of the Confederate States.
Resolved further, That the Secretary of the Treasury be requested
to estimate and report to Congress the lowest amount of appropriation
necessary to carry out the above resolution.
APPROVED March 9, 1861.
NOTE CSA Provisiuonal congress held in Montgomery Ala.
resolution 56, passed 3/09/1861.
OF INTEREST
3 orders ,
1-continue mints at new orleans, and dahlonega.
2-procure dies FOR coins of confederacy.
3-estimate cost of such an operation
ALL THIS CANCELLED APRIL 30 1861.
"GERALDS KEEN MIND, HOLDER OF 1861 WITH R,
The closure of the mint came 50 days after the initial resolution
was approved to get started on a design. So in 50 days all parties
included in the initial design, rough speciman engraving, speciman
manufacturing,
Pony express delivery, review and approval of one speciman,
pony express back to mint,
engraver making prooflike corrections to rough die, press 4 special coins
from the bullion, only to have the shop closed after 4 pressed.
All along never being told they were pressed for time
due to the upcoming closure of the mint?
They worked diligently I am sure but there is no way.
I have watched the discovery channel and even with
todays industrial superiority,
that process takes longer than 50 days. 50 days would
allow them time to prepare
4 specimans coins for approval. The mint closed before they could produce
any bullion and that is the reason the 4 gentlemen received their coins and
to make them special due to their hard work, the engraver initialed
them and each received the coins as gifts. "
When Louisiana seceded immediately alignedwith five other states.
Five states ratified the Provisional Constitution Confederate
States of America.
March11, 1861 the final Constitution Confederate States America
was ratified by seven states, original six , then Texas .
National Archives reveal that the mint superintendent Elmore,
was not never under the control of Louisiana officials,
but rather the direction of C. G. Memminger;
Secretary of the Treasury for the Confederate States of America.
The mint was under Confederate control from the very beginning.
MINT WAS OPENED, ORDER 1
ORDERS FOR DIES TO BE SUBMITTED FOR APPROVAL ORDER 2
MORE THEN LIKLY, WHEN COST WAS SUBMITTED, ORDER 3
MINTS WERE CLOSED, COST AND LACK OF BULLION.
APPROVAL OF CHOSEN DIE, AND DIE TRAILS
POSSIBLE PENDING APPROVAL OF BUDGET, BUT
ACTUAL 4 COINS MINTED IMPOSSIBLE.
DIES HAD TO BE MADE, APPROVED,
AND DIES FROM NORTH COULD NOT BE TRANSPORTED,
BUT MADE UNDER CONTRACT, SINCE IT HAD TO BE
THROUGH FEDERAL TERRORITY. THEY MADE THEIR OWN.
OBVERSE AND REVERSE. ACCORDING TO ORDERS.
COINS TESTED.
TODAY IT WOULD TAKE 3-4 MONTHS TO PRODUCE A COIN
THATS WITH ADVANCED TECH. SO 1861 IT WOULD HAVE
TAKEN EVEN LONGER THAN 3-4 MONTHS.
SO MUCH FOR THEIR IRONCLAD DESCRIPITION,
AMOUNT OF COINS MADE, DISCRIPITION..
THEY ARE OUT THERE, BUT MANY MORE THAN EXCEPTED,
WITH DIFFERENT DISCRIPITIONS AND SIZES.
I BELIEVE CORRECT SIZE IS 28 MM, NOT SILVER, JUST LIKE MINE.
DIE TRAILS NOT
SILVER PROOFS.
FROM NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
"Then in 1879 came another surprise. After an article appeared
in the Philadelphia Public Record, January 2, 1879, B.F. Taylor, M.D.,
of New Orleans, contacted E.L. Mason, Jr., Philadelphia coin dealer,
to say he had an original 1861 Confederate States of America half dollar.
He stated that four examples had been coined, that he had one,
that one of the officers of the Confederate government was given another,
another went to Professor Biddle of the University of Louisiana,
and one to Dr. Ames of New Orleans"
FROM JEFFERSON DAVIS ARTICLE
"Sir,I had a Confederate coin,
it was in my wife's trunk when it was rifled by the Federal Officers
sent on board the prison ship on which she was detained at Hampton Roads
before and after my confinement in Fortress Monroe. The coin,
some medals & other valuables were stolen at that time, whether the coin
be the same which has been offered to you as a duplicate I cannot say,
it is however not true as published that it is now in my possession.
Regretting that I cannot give you more exact information
the particular subject of your enquiry I am Respectfully,
Jefferson Davis"
MEMMENGER INFO
"he ordered that new designs for half-dollars,
should be submitted. Among several sent, the one approved bore
on the obverse of the coin a representation of the Goddess of
seated Liberty, surrounded by thirteen stars, denoting the States
from whence the Confederacy sprung, and on the lower rim
beneath the figures, 1861. On the reverse there is a shield
with seven stars, representing the seceding States;
mine has a M on obverse in addition to T, could this be
MEMMENGER's coin .
nowhere does it state davis name, he don't even mention
half dollar.in his answer to ans.
since mennenger ordered the coin, its logical, copy or
die trail would go to him, then your
theory is correct, you have riddle, i have taylor or mennenger,
this other lady i mentioned has possibly taylosr and ames
is missing, unless its under wraps and not shown.
