TOURIST INFORMATION
We get all kinds of emails. Many complement this web site while others provide images or update information. Then there are emails with questions from future visitors to Los Angeles. These are the most asked questions. This Q&A format may change to something entirely different in the future as we make improvements to better inform the tourist.
Question: Is it easy to get a cab in Los Angeles?
Answer: Cabs can always be hailed on city streets and are always found at major hotels, Union Passenger Terminal Station, the Greyhound Station, the World Port Terminal at the Port of Los Angeles, at airports, hospitals and the Financial District's Macy's Plaza and 7th at Fig shopping center. Also be aware of Bandit Cabs, those illegal nonlicensed and unsafe cabs that don't have an authorized city cab decal on the cab's door.
Question: When is the best time to visit Los Angeles?
Answer: I'd like to say anytime of the year but to be honest with you the best time is from late April to early August. That's when the weather gets to be boring as it stays about the same day in and day out. The rest of the year can literally mean unpredictable as well as predictable weather conditions such as high winds, rain, cold snaps, heatwaves, unstable stormy conditions, and whatever else nature has in store.
Question: Is there a chance I will see any stars or film production?
Answer: There is always that chance. Most on-location film production is done in the downtown City Center and mostly on weekends. As far as seeing celebrities, stay alert and keep your eyes open. Many of them like to go out just like you and me so be on the lookout at restaurants and shopping malls. You can also hang out near studio entrances and see then arrive for work.
Question: Los Angeles has a rail system that seems to go to most places except to the Westside. Will it be better to rent a car to get to the Westside or should I take the bus?
Answer: Rent a car only if you really enjoy driving in heavy congested traffic alongside rude drivers. I'd rather ride the bus to the Westside and leave the driving (and stress) to the MTA drivers. Currently the MTA is building  the Expo light rail line to Culver City and has approved extending the Wilshire Purple Line heavy rail subway to the beach once funding is in place. Both lines will end on the Westside.
Question: Is downtown (Los Angeles) really a good area for tourists to visit?
Answer: This is not only a good area to visit but a great area for tourists and locals as well. The downtown center has a wide range of first class hotels, fine restaurants, department stores, cultural venues, and entertainment choices. Public transportation is always available and there are guided tours to many historical sites. Nowhere else in all of Southern California offers so much. Please see the City Center page for more information.
