Dear Parents,

Welcome to my class!

I am so excited about having your child in my class! Your child and I will work together to learn new things and have fabulous experiences that hopefully they will remember and cherish for a lifetime.  I believe in providing your child with a loving and secure environment, giving your child the opportunity to make choices, but also give them the proper structure and boundaries to make the right choices that will help them grow academically and socially.

We have so much to learn about each other and I want to tell you a little about me. My name is Miss. Schiro (it sounds like Miss. She-ro) and this is my second year at Southwood. I truly love this school and feel so fortunate to be a member of the Southwood family. I grew up in Davidson County and graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill. I have a B.A. Ed. in Elementary Education, with a Concentration in Language in Literature. I love to frequently attend math and reading workshops and conferences and am always looking for new and exciting ways to help your child learn!  When Im not teaching, I love to read new books, shop for my classroom, go for runs outside, and spend time with my family and friends.

I firmly believe in strong parent connections, both in and out of the classroom. I welcome any concerns, questions, suggestions, and contributions! Please always feel free to stop by, call, write, or email me at any time!

This year, you will watch your child use the foundation he or she has built in kindergarten towards reading and writing, and you will see them soar. First grade is truly a wonderful experience because they grow and learn so much. They are truly like sponges! It is our job to work together to make sure their attitudes stay positive, they always try their best, and they are using all the resources possible to become a more accomplished reader and writer. While we are learning to read and write, we will also learn how to add, subract, tell time, measure, identify shapes, count money, read a calendar, and so much more. I also integrate all of our reading and writing instruction with science and social studies topics such as the seasons, what plants and animals need to change, our community, our families and how they change, different patterns of movement, rocks and soil,  and various other topics.

Overall, my primary interest is your child and my strongest desire is for your child to grow academically and socially, in as many ways possible. When your child is at school each day, you can be sure that they are cared for and in an environment that encourages good character and the desire to learn.

I am sincerely looking forward to meeting you and hope to see you and hear from you often!

Thanks,
