Introduction

After an extensive review of the MacLean report website, it has been found that the site does not currently meet its goals. The current navigation and content structure is below the standard that is required to effectively accomplish its purpose.
The primary goal of the website is to obtain customers by subscription. The current content of the website does not give the user enough preliminary information and knowledge to entice them to pay for the subscription.
The navigation of the site is also below standard, with links to the Archives page present on some pages but not others. The wording of the links is also not clear enough, and could be ambiguous to some users.

Content Needs

The primary goal of the website is to obtain customers by subscription. This subscription provides the customers with a daily report and speculation of the trend in the Futures market for that day. The report is sent to the subscriber via email every morning by Craig MacLean.
Given that the subscriber needs some form of knowledge of the Futures market to understand the daily reports, and to even bother about subscribing to the service, the website needs to provide information about what the Futures market is and how it works. Currently, the website does provide some information, but it seems to be aimed at a person that already has knowledge of the Futures and Stock markets. For the website to fulfil its purpose of gaining new subscribers, the secondary goal of the website is to educate the users without any previous knowledge of the Futures market.
For this assignment, the current information about the Futures market on the website is far from adequate. The information will need to be more comprehensive and written in a more understandable format, so the average user with no previous knowledge can easily understand the concept of the Futures market, which hopefully will lead them to becoming interested enough to get involved with the market and then to subscribe to the service provided by Craig MacLean.
It is proposed that the education section contain brief tutorials in order to better train the users in the concept and use of the Futures market. The tutorials should provide all of the information about the subject at hand to the user in a step-by-step format, so that the user can study one concept at a time. In this format, the information can be broken down into lessons, so the user can better understand each lesson before moving onto the next, making it easier for the user to comprehend the entire subject.

Content Structure

The structure of the content should remain consistent throughout the entire site, with the same font styles for titles, headings and text etc on each page. The use of Cascading Style Sheets will ensure this. When these are all kept to the same format, the user knows they are still on the same site and be comfortable from one page to the next.
The tutorials should be grouped together with their corresponding education pages. The user should be able to progress through the tutorial page/s only one step at a time. This will hopefully allow them to retain the essential information of one page before they move on to the next.

Navigation System

The main navigation for the website will be a full web model with the main pages linking to each other and the user being able to jump from one page from all other main pages. This will be on a global scale.
The education pages however, will follow a linear navigation on a local scale. The tutorials within the education pages will also be on a linear navigation with the user having to go either forward to the next lesson, or back to the previous. On the tutorial pages there will be a link to the corresponding subject’s main page.
The main navigation menu could also be a fly-out menu. This is mainly for the user that is experienced with the site to go directly to the education topic of their choice if they desire. This will save them the extra “click” of not having to go to the Education main page first and then on to the page that they originally wanted.
