Mahmoul
This is my sister Michele's recipe. I don't ever remember having it until she made it. It is a rich, sweet nutty pastry, definatly typical syrian fare... typical because it is delicious! Everything she makes is wonderful, especially her Stuffed Shells, and Famous Chocolate Cookies.
1 lb Instant Cream of Wheat
1 1/2 lbs Melted Butter
4 c Flour
1 t Vanillia
1 C Sugar + 1/4 C
Pinch of salt
2 C Warm Milk
2 C Powdered Sugar
1 Pkg Yeast
1 1/2 C Ground Nuts
Pistatios or Walnuts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mix warm butter 7 cream of Wheat together and set aside. Mix warm milk, sugar and yeast together then add cream of wheat mixture. Add the 1/4 Cup of sugar and pinch of salt to the nuts. Add flour and mix by hand. Use dough about the size of a golf ball, patting it flat in the palm of your hand and put a rounded teaspoon of nuts in center and close it up and put dough in mold, and press on a flat surface. Pat on table to remove from mold.
Bake @ 350* for 20 minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar when cold.
If you make these in advance for a holiday or even freeze them then take them out to thaw 12 hours before you need them, powder sugar prior to serving.
