Goodbye
She gasped desperately, each breath painful,
Choking back harsh sobs and hot tears.
Her head bent low, her sobs pitiful,
Perched on her knees, feeling fear.

She squeezed shut her eyes, her tears burned,
They seared across her cheeks, leaving,
Trails of hurt, confusion, her stomach churned,
And she crouched in the corner, crying.

Miserable her life was, filled with hurt and lies,
And she cried them all out, unable to stop,
But most of all, for love were her cries,
All that was heard was the stroke of the clock.

She recalled the times she was happy,
Walking with ones she loved in the sunlight,
For what she had done she was sorry,
But she was still left all alone at night.

Her soft cries were soundless, unclear and muffled,
Then with a tear-drenched face, she looked at the sky,
She discovered an accusing moon, she was baffled,
She wondered why it was, for she never did lie.

Hopelessly she wiped her tearful eyes,
And slowly rose toward her bed.
She'd loved him truly, there were no lies,
But he didn't believe her, farewell he bade.

A tired sigh escaped her parched lips,
She didn't know what to make of confusion,
She pulled at her covers, no strength in her grip,
She gave him her love, she gave him devotion.

The thought hurt her more than she could bear,
She wiped her eyes and walked into the moonlight,
She still had so much love, with him she's like to share,
So she let herself fall in love with the dark night.

With a tearful sigh she undid her silky braids,
And let herself calm down on her bed she lies,
With a shaky hand she closed the shades,
She did, after all, say goodbye.
