Idea

This is an old junk cabinet that I've had for years. Paid little or nothing for it. It's in a closet in my spare room and is surrounded by lots of worthless junk (I have to keep it all, it's part of the disguise!!). There's a couple of boxes on top and I lean some old shelving up in front to further bury it in with its surroundings. It's only 30" wide x 16" deep x 32" tall (outside dimensions). VERY UNOBTRUSIVE!

With the front panel set aside and the boxes removed from on top it is, (ta daaa...) TRANSFORMED!! (Er, ah, sorry about the low-tech here, guys. I'm one of those KISS asses (Keep It Simple Stupid) so it's actually my focus. I've torn this thing apart and put it back together several times and it's constantly evolving toward simpler--gonna try a Gericke style experiment next). It's powered by a 150w hps with a glass shield and its a modular SCROG in an 18 quart rubbermaid bubbler. C99 clones are at about 30 days flowering. Thank you SCW, Highgrade and MrSoul!!!

Nothing is actually attached to the cabinet so it's easily moved if needed. I originally had the light inside with a glass shield separating the spaces but I gained some needed height (I really need about 36" with the light inside) and got rid of a fan by cutting a hole in the top of the cabinet and simply setting the light there. I intended to finish it with something permanent but will soon abandon this cabinet, anyway. The boxes on top of the cabinet are removed at night before the light comes on and replaced during the day when the light is off. I attached tempered glass to the inside of the cabinet under the light but actually caused the cabinet to be too cold. I've now got a 6" glass strip under the 12" round reflector catching the direct heat blast from the bulb but letting some of the surrounding heat radiate into the cabinet. The fan is on a heavy duty dimmer and runs quietly at about 1/2 speed. It's still cold but they seem to be tolerating it OK (in fact, I think the roots are enjoying it!). Running about 58 degrees with lights off and about 68 with lights on. Air pump is a Rena 400 and VERY quiet.

Here's a better look at the screen. It's 14" x 27" (box is 15" x 29" inside). This is my first time finishing anything in this box but 2.8 sq. ft. should produce about 4 to 4 1/2 oz. based on my experience with this plant. I'm stretching the light a little more than in the past but that's part of my experimenting and it's looking no different than at higher wattages psf. She's ready in 50 days as advertised but I let her go 60 days to add some "body". Again, they're at about 30 days here.

So here are my "bathing beauties". Their roots bathing in a nute bubble bath and their flowers bathed in light--why wouldn't these girls be happy?!

I love this pic, too, because it's like an x-ray of my light coverage--penetrating right through the foliage to the screen directly below the light and only losing a little on the sides. The reflection from the sides is evident so the shaded areas in the front are probably handled when the front panel is in place. And most all of the light seems to be contained in the small cubicle above the screen. I love it!

Okay, I mentioned that I was abandoning the old "junky" cabinet and here's why. I picked one of these up at a cheapy furniture place for $79 and "converted" it (jeez, the first cabinet took a year to build and this one only took about an hour--practice makes perfect!). Liked it so much that I went back and got another one to use as a dresser (whoa! there's an idea! notice that it was my second thought!). Figured that it "kept my options open", too (good thing; I've already decided to convert it!). Each one is the same width as the old cabinet but they're 20" deep (19" inside) and 42" tall! More than enough height to put the light back inside. Hell, it's so tall I could leave the top drawer in! (Funny thing is that they're still short enough to actually stack one on top of the other and miss the ceiling by a foot!!) I can get two of my 18 quart rubbermaids, turned sideways, into each cabinet and each rubbermaid will have a net that's 13" x 18". The new, "converted" cabinet is sitting next to the other, unconverted one and, if I've done my job, you can't tell the difference.

I have decided to convert the new dresser. One will be used to maintain my existing, excellent C99 and the other will be to test some new genetics (It's Cafe Girl x C88 from MrSoul himself--I'm so proud!). The old junky cabinet will be used just occasionally for cloning (I don't use mothers). If anyone's interested in how to do one of these conversions, just ask and I'll do a show and tell!

Thumbs Up Whoa!

You cant even tell with the new dressers! Thats great! Does the heat from the ballast give you any problems? Is the bubbler set-up hard to do? I would like to try somthing like that. Any xtra info would help. Buzz.

Bubblers hard???

actually I would say they are one of the easiest ways to break the hydro barrier feed em lightly and keep the air comming and the light out of the res and youll have pretty babies

Nimby
hella job my friend looks sharp and your gonna have a shitload of buds when you quadrupled you yield ...one thind dont you have preoblems with algae with the clearish rubbermaid? hell mine was dark and I covered it with foil tape to rid light and reflect it both but the initial worry was the light penatration as a nasty attack of root rot doomed my first bubbler attempt <yeah yeah I remember ...lets not go there> but as it has been said so many times and sooooo succinctly if it aint broke dont fix it so...grow on brother looks very very realistic side by side was amazing couldnt tell from the pic at all

Thumbs Up Very Nice!

Try to get air pump mounted above the bubbler's water line or make a big loop with tubing so if pump goes down no back siphon occurs.

unless of course...

you have done the smart thing and invested the $0.88 and installed a check valve this notwithstanding better follow the big blue ones advice lest ye suffer the siphon effect and remember a pump is an electrical appliance and once you lets the magick smoke out of em they are Kaput <trust this one from teching exp. the magick smoke is key to the op. of any electrical or <especially>electronic equip.... absolutely KEY> LOL

The one on the right is the grow.

Very good Nimby, no I should say excellent job. I picked the one on the right as the grow. It seemed to have a light reflection out of the top drawer. I was wrong, that was a good one. It looks so Identical. You did good. How is the heat with the 150 ballast and were did you mount it? Enjoy the grow and harvest, it looks to be a rewarding one. Nice expeirment.

That's incredible Nimby. Make sure you save all this stuff, in 10 or 20 years when we're all legalized the Smithsonian museum will want your setup - for the "underground railroad" of cannabis exhibit!
