The Phantom of the Play

written by Pheonix

Evabelle was shaking with unbearable excitement. Tonight was her club play and she was the main character-a dazzling princess-in it. She could not keep still as her car steadily drove through the driving rain. Her face suddenly paled when an evil, sinister laugh echoed through the clear black night. A chill ran up her shaking spine, when the bright, heavily decorated clubhouse came into sight. In a flash, she forgot about the dreadful laugh and quick as lightning, she leapt out of her car and shot into the dimly lit corridor which led to the clubhouse doorway. She quickly slid her membership pass into a little slit and easily pushed the door open. Running through the narrow hallway of the clubhouse, she skidded to a halt in front of a door that said “The Phantom of the Play”. Just to let you know, the play she was in (The Phantom of the Play) consisted of a princess that is captured by a dragon when she is watching a play. And surprisingly, it is not a prince, noble or king that rescues her, but the man who was acting as the phantom in the play that rescues her. In the end, the princess figures out that the man who rescued her was not actually a man, but a real phantom. The play ends when the princess falls in love with the phantom and both of them disappear. What Evabelle did not know was that her own fate would be similar.
These are some of the characters in the play that Evabelle is in:
Joelston - the character that plays the phantom. His costume consists of a great eagle mask with fierce burning eyes, blades that fit on his arm so that it seems his arms are the blades, a great blue cape, and golden wings made of real feathers that fold on his back and is as long as he is and a long tail that ends with a needle sharp point. Evabelle is deeply in love with him.
Evabelle - the “princess” of the play. Her costume consists of a beautiful sapphire dress with real ruby, emerald and sapphire rings. Joelston loves her. She also “goes out” with him a lot.
Brandon - the evil dragon in the play. His costume includes great, blue leathery wings the size of himself, a fearsome blue dragon mask with great long curving claws and a leathery blue hide that covers his body. Evabelle hates him, but Brandon’s heart is set on her.
During the night of the play, Evabelle could not hold her excitement. Everyone was in position, that is, except Joelston. He was nowhere to be found. When he finally appeared, the play was already on for 20 minutes. He caught onto his part right on time.
At the end of the play, everyone was dead tired. Evabelle went to find Joelston, but before she could reach his room, Brandon caught her and evilly trapped her in a dark corner of the small room. Evabelle screamed on the top of her lungs for Joelston. Suddenly, there was a great rush of air and Joelston swooped in, wings outstretched. Evabelle could not believe her eyes; Joelston was not a man! Brandon narrowed his eyes and rushed at Joelston, a huge claw outstretched. Joelston easily avoided the attack and slashed at Brandon’s wing. Evabelle gasped when blood flowed freely from the injured wing; Brandon was not a man either!
They fought for a good long time, when Brandon seemed to give up and flew away. Joelston turned to Evabelle and said softly “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.” With that, he spread his wings to fly away when Evabelle, her heart full of sorrow and love grabbed his tail, pulled him back and quickly kissed him. Joelston’s eyes twinkled and brimmed with tears. “I never knew a girl who-” His words were cut off when a horrid slashing noise interrupted him. He gave a crooked cry as his eyes slowly closed, dimmed with death, as he slumped to the ground. Evabelle screamed when she saw the long straight wound that ran across Joelston’s heavily bleeding back. Smiling at his victory, Brandon grabbed Evabelle in his claws and spread his wings to take off. Evabelle tore herself away from his claws and knelt by Joelston’s side. “Please, don’t go…” she whispered to Joelston’s slumped form “I love you…” At that instance, both of them were surrounded by a bright shining white light and when it dimmed, Evabelle and Joelston were gone, never to be seen again.
