Kushiel's Dart Jacqueline Carey
It's a really deep, intense book with deep political intrigue. Phedre is a cortesean, skilled in the arts of intrigue and the bed chamber. She is marked by the God Kushiel and will forever find pleasure hand in hand with pain. A plot is coming slowly set in motion that deprives her from all she holds dear and drops her into the deapths of enemy territory, with nothing but her wits and her bodyguard. She needs to think and fight her way out of the situation in time to rescue her homeland from invasion of barbarians and deadly intrigue that threatens the throne from within.
This is the first work of a triliogy, and the second and third work are on the same level of intensity. Kushiel's Chosen is the second, and Kushiel's Avatar is the last. Unlike other series that just sort of fizzle as they go on, this one ends as intense as it begins. |
