| ...well, until two years later. By then, I'd met another guy. He was different. Really. He had dark brown hair and eyes the color of mocha coffee. He loved kids. He liked going to movies and holding hands. And I loved the puppy-dog look of love in his eyes when he looked at me. We started going steady when he hid a sweetheart ring in a candy box he sent to me for Valentine's Day, my senior year of high school. (Now that's sweet and romantic!) We were going to wait till I finished college before we married, but we didn't. We wanted to be together. We married when I was nineteen. Being a married college student was not any easier. I was still struggling with school issues. Should I major in art, English, or journalism? What grade levels did I want to teach? Was I ever going to make it? He seemed unaware of my concerns. That was as much my fault as his. He figured that I was so smart, I wouldn't even have to study. I needed some emotional support. However, I did learn one thing rather quickly. My husband was jealous when I was friendly with other men. So I stopped having male friends. Instead, I had the babies I had always longed to have. Three, in five years' time. He felt unprepared to change from my friend and lover into someone's father, so he distanced himself from me. I didn't understand, until the day I found the letter. Then it all became clear. He married her as soon as our divorce was final. They celebrated their 20th aniversary this year. |
