We all dread the inevitable question from our kids: what happens to people after they die? We can simply say we don’t know or we can offer some explanation from our faith. Either way, it’s a dreaded question.
It reminds me of how she often says funny little things about how when I was a little girl she was my mother. She also takes information from what’s going on around her and personalizes it. For example, when John had surgery on his shoulder, she would say, “When I had surgery…” And when Johnny broke his arm she talked about the time when she broke her hand… Well, that never happened, either. It makes me think of some of my old Psychology classes when we learned about some legal cases where they took a child’s testimony at face value. Or when they would give a kid a doll and say “show me where he touched you.” Allison tells stories all the time, and I guess if you didn’t know her, you might think she was telling stories from real life. I hate to think that someday someone will hear one of her fabrications and think it was true.
