InspiringOne's Poetry Challenge

...is the result of three events which aligned perfectly for a Thematic Challenge. First, the USA celebrates Thanksgiving on November 22 - a day when we all take a few moments (I hope!) to reflect on all that we have been given (whether joy or heartache - it all has its reason.) Secondly, I received an email which I have included below that puts a different spin on gratitude. The third event is a deeply personal one that has made me and my family realize how very much we have to be thankful for this year.

As always with my Challenges, there are no forms to follow or "rules" to muddle our brains. Simply aim that pen of yours at paper (or aim those fingers at computer keys!) and write a poem, or an essay, or even just post a few comments about what you are thankful for and/or what Thanksgiving means to you.

I am thankful for . . .

the spouse who hogs the covers every night,
because he/she is not out with someone else.

the teenager who is not doing dishes but is watching TV,
because that means he/she is at home and not on the streets.

the taxes that I pay,
because it means that I am employed.

the mess to clean after a party,
because it means that I have been surrounded by friends.

the clothes that fit a little too snug,
because it means I have enough to eat.

my shadow that watches me work,
because it means I am out in the sunshine.

a lawn that needs mowing,
windows that need cleaning,
and gutters that need fixing,
because it means I have a home.

all the complaining I hear about the government,
because it means that we have freedom of speech.

the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot,
because it means I am capable of walking
and that I have been blessed with transportation.

my huge heating bill,
because it means I am warm.

the lady behind me in church who sings off key,
because it means that I can hear.

the pile of laundry and ironing,
because it means I have clothes to wear.

weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day,
because it means I have been capable of working hard.

the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours,
because it means that I am alive.

Usually I compile all responses onto a special Challenge site (as the Biki does with his challenges), but due to the nature of this challenge (and pressing personal commitments), I will not be able to do so this time. However, I look forward to reading ALL your Thanksgiving entries. Gratitude is something we should celebrate EVERY day.

Oh yea. The Disclaimer: This challenge is enirely voluntary. You will NOT be injured if you don't contribute. (But I reserve the right to pout a bit.) This Challenge is presented solely for the purpose of creative expression and FUN. Now go WRITE! hehe
