20. The Unnatural
Duchovny's writing/directing debut, The Unnatural is a grand slam! Okay, okay, I couldn't resist the pun... Seriously, David D. does a great job all the way around. He incorporates baseball into an X-File (which rocks!), he has fun with Mulder & Scully, he carefully tells a great semi-mytharc story, and he directs like he's done it before. Although this is the longest episode I've seen, I really enjoy sitting down to watch it. The character study of the alien is also a nice touch.
