| Redrum is a great episode because of its writing, I think. The story is interesting, the character of Martin Wells is captivating, and the plot is not predictible, as it could have been. So very, very wise were the folks at 1013 to place this episode later in the season (notice that it was filmed third). There's no way the fans would have accepted an episode this Dogget-heavy (or Scully-lite, depending on your point of view!) early on in the season. I think that we've gotten used to him, and some of us (myself included) really like him. When the Spider-man was about to slice the wife's throat, and the shot rang out and nailed him, all in my living room shouted, "DOGGETT!" He might be a hard-nosed, by-the-book guy (he sent his friend to prison, for crying out loud!), but isn't it fun to have that great cop element? Speaking of cop elements, this brings up an interesting point: will TXF become too much like "Law & Order"? Take away the whole backwards progression of time, and you've got a darn fine cop show. I'm not presenting this as a negative observation of Redrum, just opening up a can of worms, I suppose. However, I wouldn't want to see anything similar every week--but that's not going to happen. Every indication is that we still have our X-Files, clearly intact. One last thought: I find myself wondering, what will it be like when Mulder returns to work with Doggett? I can't wait for those two to get together on a few cases.... A+ |
