This is an excellent opportunity to examine Mulder's character, since he spends time away from Scully, in a manner very similar to season five's Chinga. In fact, there are many similarities here. Both have sporadic hints of amusement spaced between intense scenes involving witchcraft-type horror. This time, the roles are reversed, and Scully is the bored one.
But there is a difference here. While Scully's boredom is amusing, it leads to the main storyline for the upcoming episode, all things. As for Mulder, this is a more pointed look at his desires for a home life. Weird. It's not unnecessary or even unsuitable--just feels funny to look at Mulder this way.
I really enjoyed the combination of character study and case-solving.
