Chapter seven. The 90s.

1990

The Arnold Classic was won by Mike Ashley. He won the 1986 IFBB World Amateur Championships as light-heavyweight.

Mike Ashley , probably the biggest vegetarian bodybuilder in history.

After the retirment of Cory Everson, Ms. Olympia was won by Lenda Murray, who will win 6 times in a row (from 1990 to 1995); she finished also 2nd in 1996 and 1997, and after a pause of 5 years, she won also in 2002 the heavyweight class and overall title of Ms. Olympia.

Lenda Murray , 7 times Ms. Olympia. Lenda and Cory Everson, together, won 12 Ms. Olympia in a row.

1991

Second classified in this year's Mr. Olympia was Dorian Yates. Dorian was quite unknown in the world of professional bodybuilding. He came from Birmingham, England, and he trained himself with a particular method, the so-called Heavy Duty, invented by Mike Mentzer in 70s.

The Arnold Classic was won by Shawn Ray.

Shawn Ray. In spite of his light weight ("only" 93 kg - 205 lbs.), he competed in 13 editions of Mr. Olympia, and from 1990 the worst result was a 5th place !

1992

After the retirment of Lee Haney, Dorian Yates won Mr. Olympia. He probably would have won also against Lee Haney. Yates was a very massive bodybuilder, and won 6 consecutive times this competition - from 1992 to 1997. Second classified was an incredibly Kevin Levrone, probably at the best condition of his life. In the same competition, we assist at the return of Lou Ferrigno, after 17 years of absence, who finished 12th.

Dorian Yates. At the top of his condition, the weight of Dorian Yates was about 120 kg (264 lbs.).

The Arnold Classic was won by Vince Taylor.

Vince Taylor. 22 victories as a pro bodybuilder, more than any other bodybuilder in history.

1993

Second classified in Mr. Olympia was Flex Wheeler, who won the Arnold Classic in the same year.

Ken Wheeler, nicknamed "Flex". In 1994, he survived at a tremendous crash with his Mercedes-Benz.

1994

To separate over- and under-40 professional athlets, IFBB created a special competition for over 40, named Master Olympia. This year's edition was won by Robby Robinson, while Lou Ferrigno finished 2nd and decided to abandon competitions.

Kim Chizevsky won Ms. Olympia four times in a row. She was featured in the film "The Cell".

1998

After the retirment of Dorian Yates for a serious problem at his triceps, Mr. Olympia was won by Ronnie Coleman. Unlike other professionists, Coleman is actually a policeman who works in Arlington, Texas (USA). Coleman seems now unbeatable: he won '99, 2000, 2001 and 2002 edition of Mr. Olympia.

In Ms. Olympia contest we assist at the splitting of the athlets into two categories: under 135 lbs. (61 kg) and over. The winner of lightweight class was Andrulla Blanchette from England, while the winner of heavyweight was Valentina Chepiga from Ukraine. No overall title was allowed this year.
