"Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September is a celebration honoring the working class. Initiated by the Knights of Labor, they held a large parade in New York on Tuesday, September 5th, 1882. The day was celebrated by picnics, concerts and speeches. Over ten thousand workers marched in a parade from City Hall to Union Square. In 1884 the Knights of Labor held a parade on the first Monday of September and thereby designated that it would be the official date of the parade recognizing laborer's every year. Soon after workers of other organizations across the nation began to rally their legislators to declare the day a national legal holiday. The first law to be enacted was in Colorado in March of 1887. They were then followed by New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts. Congress declared Labor Day a legal holiday in 1894."
