You cannot escape Shoji Meguro. There is nothing, NOTHING at all he can't do. It's to the point whre I actully loath this man. But at the same time he's my God. Where "Emo" bands only play one note, he makes that one note playing COOL. As shown with his work in "Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne", he can even make death/black metal cool with that high-pitch demon-growl style of singing. This guy makes it all right to like game music and admit it to the public. That's how good he is. I haven't heard anything of his on Maken X, but I'm sure it's as good as all of this stuff. And this stuff which I'm about to talk about is "Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga OST Integral". It's the complete soundtrack to both DDS games (not like the CD's that came with the games themselves). Four disks of nothing but rock. The first two disks are to the first DDS game. It's all rock n roll. Can't get more detailed then that, can I? Yes I can. The first four songs sound like anything you'll hear in a RPG. I believe they're here to get rid of any stupid person who'll listen to this. That or lure any Final Fantasy geek in... Then track five comes, "Embryon". One of the most rare instruments to appear in a RPG ever, the guitar, comes in with a solid chug with a menecing kick drum beating. It continues like that, then a second guitar comes out of nowhere to back up the first. Shoji's such a tease because then it goes back to a generic theme before the next song, one of the town themes which is a soothing rock song. Then from here on out, most of the time it's like this. A nice rock song, or a menecing one. Till you get to disk two, track 18. DUNNDA DA DA DUNNDA DA DA. Like a machine gun, the guitar, bass and dums play at once. A succession of fight songs will take place. Not like Falcons over the top lame synth crap, no. ROCK songs. THOUGHT OUT rock songs. If theres a synthasizer, it's only to ADD to the experince, not to butt in front of the guitar to remind you of how much your life sucks. Once the five fights are done with, comes the after-battle screen theme which just sends shivers down my spine. Even it's name, "Relief" sends shivers. It's just morbid. Deliciously morbid. The CD closes with the final boss theme of the first game, "Hari-Hiri". A slow rock ballad with a powerful chorus. And so the first game ends, now the second begins... |
