Microsoft profit tops expectations
THE SOFTWARE GIANT SAID it earned $2.73
billion or 50 cents a share in the quarter ending Sept. 30, compared with
$1.28 billion or 23 cents a share in the comparable period a year ago, when
it wrote off more than $1 billion in after-tax investment losses. Microsoft
wrote off another $291 million in operating losses in the latest quarter,
lowering its earnings by 5 cents a share.
Still, the reported 50 cents a share was far better than the 43 cents
that most analysts had expected, based on guidance the company issued three
months ago.
Revenue rose to $7.75 billion for the fiscal first quarter, more than
$600 million ahead of the company’s stated expectations, and up 26 percent
from the $6.13 billion reported a year ago.
