BONNING

 

We start this part of the family history with Leila Josephine Bonning.

She was born on 20 August 1892, at Ingham.

She was one of ten children born to George Bonning and Mary O'Leary. George Bonning was a carrier at Ingham, which, in those days, meant a horse or two, and dray.

The others were:

George Bonning, born on 12 June, 1889, (died 30 June 1990),

Etheline Mary Bonning, born on 25 April 1891,

Elsie Jessie Bonning, born on 8 November 1893,

an unnamed female child born on 9 May 1895, (died 15 May 1995),

James Bonning, born on 4 April 1896, (died 10 April 1996),

Thomas Edward Bonning, born on 21 August 1897,

Eric Dennis Bonning, born o, 22 February 1899,

Evelyn Glen Bonning born on 12 September 1902

       

Their mother, Mary O'Leary, was of Irish extraction.

       

One possible brother of George was Charles Bonning. This assumption is made upon the basis that they appeared to have married two sisters.

       

George Bonning had married his bride Mary O'Leary, early in 1887. Later in the same year, Charles Bonning married Anastasia O'Leary, who may have been a sister to Mary.

Mary Elizabeth Bonning, born on 17 February 1898,

Another Bonning in Queensland during the same era, Thomas Frederick Bonning, married Evelyn Jane Ball in 1898. Thomas Frederick Bonning was definitely a brother to George Bonning. Their parents were Job Bonning and Hannah Prior.

 

Thomas Frederick Bonning and Evelyn Jane Ball had children:

Thomas Edward Bonning, born on 24 January 1900 (died 24 January, 1900)

Elsie Evelyne Bonning, born on 6 December 1900.

       

Thomas Frederick Bonning died on 25 December 1904, and his widow remarried, in 1905. Evelyn Jane Bonning, nee` Ball, on 6 August 1905, married James Ashworth Davis.

       

Yet another then current Bonning, Edgar Sidney Bonning, was the youngest of the eight children of Job Bonning and Hannah Prior. Edgar Sidney Bonning  married Rose Ellen Dudley, and had children:

 

Mary Florence Bonning, on 2 May 1900.

Edgar Darrel Bonning, on 28 February 1902,

Lelia May Bonning, on 22 May 1904.

 

The parents of Thomas Frederick Bonning, George Bonning, Edgar Sidney Bonning and the five other children (names not yet known, but of whom the other mentioned Charles Bonning appears to be one) from their respective Death Certificates, were Job Bonning and Hannah Prior.

       

Job Bonning himself died on 7 December 1908, in Queensland, and his wife Hannah Bonning died in Queensland on 29 December 1920. Her parents were Thomas Prior and a Pamelia. This tends to indicate that a Bonning family unit emigrated to Queensland, and more specifically, Ingham in North Queensland. The date of that emigration appears to be 1881.

 

The parentage  for the father Job Bonning, was Thomas Bonning and Elizabeth Long.

 

Neither, Job, nor Elizabeth Long, are mentioned in the IGI Indices for England, but appear to have come from Seavington St. Mary and Whitelackington in Somerset, England.

 

It should be pointed out that the IGI Indices do mention a few Thomas Bonning. There are five Thomas Boning (note spelling): Thomas Boning, 1772, Gloucestershire, (father Thomas Boning); Thomas Boning, 1772, Norfolk, (father Thomas Boning); Thomas Boning, 1794, Norfolk (father Cornelius Boning); Thomas Boning, 1825, Norfolk (father Robert Boning); Thomas Boning, 1851, Norfolk, (mother Elizabeth Boning). There is one mention of a Thomas Bonning: 1820, Staffordshire, father Thomas Bonning. There are also said to be Bonnings from the London area.

       

Returning to the family of George Bonning and Mary O'Leary, Anna Catherine Bonning married Walter Charles Barnes on 20 October 1909. Leila Josephine Bonning married Frank Godschall Johnson on 24 November, 1910.

       

Her sister Etheline Jane Bonning, married William McNaughton Christie on 20 August, 1913.

 

Later, her youngest sister, Evelyn, otherwise known as "Bub", married Lionel Wiss, in the 1920's.

       

Lionel used to manage the Bank of New South Wales at Vulture Street, South Brisbane.

       

Lionel Wiss and Bub had two children, a daughter Moira, and a son Alan.

 

Moira moved to Goondiwindi and married a Colin Goodman. She now lives at Buderim in Queensland.

       

Alan lived at Southport.

       

There is only one other Bonning marriage recorded earlier in Queensland, that in 1882 of Elizabeth Bonning to William Fanning. She is a possible early relation.

 

Little else is known about the Bonning family about from Leila's sister Bub, and the existence of a brother, Thomas.

       

However there is said to have been an early Bonning in the family who was a Moderator General of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland. That story may be apocryphal.

 

Bev Bonning, a Brisbane resident, is descended from the youngest son of Job Bonning, namely Edgar Sidney Bonning.

She has provided the following information:

 

Job Bonning was born 3 November 1843 in the Parish of Seavington St Mary, County of Somerset, England, and was married to Hannah Prior on 14 June 1862 at Seavington St Mary in the Bible Christian Chapel (Bewlah Chapel) which was next to Orrly (or Owly) Farm noted in the Censuses.

They had 8 children:

The family emigrated on the Scottish Knight sailing from Plymouth on 3 March 1881 and arrived in Townsville on 15 June 1881.

Edgar Sidney Bonning, youngest son of Job Bonning and his wife, Hannah Prior, was born in Whitelackington (his
baptism is recorded in the Parish Registers). The Parish Registers, as reflected in the International Genealogical Index, do not record the birth or christening of the other children and these were probably baptised in the Bible Christian Chapel in Whitelackington, which might account for the lack of readily available records.

There was a magisterial enquiry into Job's death, which is lodged at the Queensland State Archives (listed under John Bonning).

As above, Job Bonning's parents were Thomas Bonning and Elizabeth Long. Thomas Bonning was baptised late February 1811 in the Parish of Shepton Beauchamp. Thomas Bonning married Elizabeth long on 30 September 1832 in the Parish of Seavington St Mary, County of Somerset.

Baptisms are recorded in the Parish Register for Seavington St Mary for all of the abovementioned offspring except Job Bonning.

 

Amelia Bonning married James Harris in 1863 in the same Chapel that Job Bonning married Hannah Prior. There were 3 children of the marriage of Amelia Bonning to James Harris:  John Harris, Eliza J. Harris and Mary Elizabeth Harris. James Harris died in 1872.

 

Joseph Bonning was a cripple and never married.

 

Charles Bonning joined the Royal Marines and married a Mary Jane Lee in Plymouth in 1866. They had 8 children.

 

Thomas Bonning died in 1875 in Wells, and Elizabeth Bonning died in 1875 in Seavington St Mary.

 

Going back a generation:

 

Elizabeth Long, (wife of Thomas Bonning) was the daughter of John Long and Elizabeth Long. John Long and his wife Elizabeth were married in Lopen where Elizabeth was born. This John Long appears from the 1851 Census to have been born in Bridport, Dorsetshire.

 

Thomas Bonning was the son of Thomas Bonning and Hannah Scott who married in Shepton Beauchamp in 1804.
