While William was in the service both Sophia and George died, Sophia on 27 November 1863 and George that same year.
In May 1866 he married Ann Elizabeth Ingram in Cuyahoga, Ohio.
William, or Billy as he was widely known, and Lizzie had nine children.
After Ann's death 30 May 1904, Billy married for a third time to Mary Ann (Ingram) Campbell.
