Whatever became of the first moment
when one first knew about death?

                       -- Tom Stoppard

Little boys in the backyard
Standing in freshly fallen snow.
Breaking toys, and pointless pacts.
Running free in sunny freedom.
Taking dares, chasing girls,
Preschool chivalry.

Fields of tunneled drifts
Hiding, peeking through the snow.
Icy bird in the flower bed,
Thoughts of confusion.
Should have flown away.

Subtle tear,
Moments gone,
Time to go and play.
Stop and listen for a mothers call,
Notice the setting sun.

Hesitation.
Day is done, icy and dark.
Is sun dying?
Moments gone.
Should have flown away.
