This page will do it's best to help remedy that...WELL, now this site hasn't been worked on for YEARS, though I still don't think dwarves get enough credit/attention, I'm not sure what I can do about it.
Now, I know we all love J.R.R. Tolkien's books, as they are the original and best as far as fantasy goes. Unfortunately, our man concentrates far too much on elves and man, and not on the dwarves he made so central to The Hobbit. But, the dwarves are major players in the history of Middle Earth despite their rare appearences. They are a powerful people--the greatest builders and fighters of all the races--and have had great impact on the shaping of history. Sometimes this is good, sometimes bad, but they are not a force to be overlooked as they so often are, despite their height...
Now, there are some stereotypes which we all know, but stereotypes only tell part of the truth. If you are one of those elf-lovers, read the Silmarilion and see how stupid they can be. Not that I dislike elves, they just are far from perfect. And I'm a definite Tolkien purist, too, so don't talk to me about dwarves with guns and wierd machines. That's just silly stuff. Here's to a Baldur's Gate campaign with all dwarves!!! HUZZAH!!!
Think about Dwarves in movies, though, or AD&D. Directors don't seem to know what to do with them except to add comic relief. I mean, what happened to Gimli in "The Two Towers" after his minimal but serious part in the first movie. I mean, he doesn't actually do too many stupid things, but they give him all the jokes--and always at his expence. And the silly dwarf in the Dungeons and Dragons movie, oh my. I'd like to see somebody not give in to the comic stereotypes for once, but Peter Jackson was probably my best hope for that, and he has failed me, too.
