WHERE HAVE ALL THE STASIS GONE ?
Long time passing.......
It was said that about a third of the population of the former East Germany worked for the STASI. Most of these would have been little more than minor snitches, informers, feeding the State with information on their neighbours, their fellow workers or their family even. I knew a number of these when I worked in Berlin some years ago. Nevertheless, there remained a number who were trained, some highly trained, and sent largely to West Germany, often in the guise of refugees. Many reinvented themselves in West Germany and then went on further afield. They represented an efficient and effective force, as the various spy scandals in West Germany in the 70s and 80s demonstrated and this at the highest level. What has happened to all these people? After reunification, files were made open to individuals to inspect. I believe however that certain files were destroyed, particularly where individuals were recruited to work for other security agencies, MI6 or the CIA. Like their KGB counterparts, the STASI did attract candidates of the highest calibre. They had good, solid networks around Europe and I would not be surprised if some of these have not gone private, but that I mean are working in the private sector. As what ? How about industrial espionage. How about taking on ay assignment for anyone as long as it pays well ? November 2002
