| WHO WANTS THE OLYMPICS? | ||||
| Who says the Olympics are good for this country? I don't agree. Oh, I know, it would be nice on the one hand, but we have a good few years of this Labour Government left to organise the event and more importantly, prepare for it. I mean, everything Blair has touched in this respect has gone sour. It is inevitable that there will be a mega cost over-run. There always is, but with these people it will be hefty. Given then that he will not be in power when the event draws near, who will carry the can for any cock-ups, of which there will be many. Perhaps that is why he does not really care. When things go wrong, 'it weren't me, M'Lud!' His usual cop-out. Who will pay for this? The fact that it is envisaged that Londoners will be asked, let me re-phrase that, told to pay a contribution via their council tax is quite outrageous. There should have been a referendum on this, indeed, there still should be. Let us see how many thenwant them held in this country. No, I believe the Olympics should be held in one country, on an on-going basis. What's wrong with Greece, where they started in the first place? They have the infra-strcuture and all nations can contribute on a yearly or four-yearly basis to keep facilities up to scartch. This idea is as old as the hills, but let us look at it again. The politisation of the Olympics in any event, and each nation trying to out-do the other on every occasion, is both unpleasant and wastes resources. Money saved could in each case be put to much better causes. Many in this country seem to believe that Britain is doing so well in so many ways; economically, in matters of sport, in world-leadership, etc etc. We are living in a dream world. Things could not be worse and the chickens will come home to roost sooner than later. |
