We had published recently a number of statistics on immigration to this country, both my the Government and its offices, and by Immigration Watch. The former of course cannot be taken seriously, their track record speaks for itself. But even the latter sadly are wrong.

Let us deal here with immigrants, here legally, from those parts of Eastern Europe, now part of the EU. Poland, the country with the largest population of these, supplies most of these immigrants. Research by immigration watch is patently desk research, using to a large extent the very statistics which are of no value, which can be totally disregarded, founded on fiction, not fact.

I suggest that there are a minimum of 1.2 million immigrants, largely from Poland, who have settled in this country. This figure is based on research, both qualitative and quantitative, but it incorporates one aspect of research in this field, that none of the others do. Get onto the streets of London, Birmingham, Manchester, of all our major cities, towns and connurbations and see and measure for yourself. That is the only way that any appraisement can be made. There is no other way. Even MI5 recently published figures which are a complete nonsense and throws doubt on the efficacy of that organisation. How sad.

There is talk of most of these immigrants coming here to work in the short term and then returning. Not so. The vast majority are here to stay as long as they find employment, legally or illegally. The figure of 1.2 million includes adults, but not children. So very many, and one must not forget most Poles are Catholic, are having their children here. It makes sense from their point of view. After all, they have - arguably - at their disposal better hospital treatment and certainly better post natal services, both medical and social.

Eastern Europe apart, there is much talk about a uniformed immigration service. This is arrant nonsense. I mean, why not, but it won't work because it stems from a Government that has been unable to put any idea into operation since in power. That is demonstrable. One cannot solely blame this Government, the rot set in under John Major's last administration. There is no longer any control at our borders, entering or leaving this country. The number of occasions I have seen immigrants without papers being waved through immigration at our airports, let alone our sea ports.

Looking at immigration on a wider basis, I assess that there are some 6.4 million immigrants, not refugees, who have settled here for the most part illegally over the past 15 years. In much of London and other major cities, one will find English not spoken, or hardly spoken. The bulk of these immigrants have no wish to assimilate, no wish whatsoever. Some argue their children will adopt the English way of life. Not if their parents have anything to do with it.

This gives us 1 in 10 people who are alien to this country and our way of life. If one takes in immigration since World War II, I suggest the figure is 1 in 6. This situation must not be allowed to continue. The infrastructure of this country cannot support these intrantes. It is imperative that they be returned to their countries of origin.
