| I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, as well as experience in Hapkido, military combatives, Jujitsu, submission-style grappling, Ninjitsu, Kung Fu, and kickboxing. By "combat self-defense", I mean a style of fighting that is primarily oriented towards realistic self-defense. My stye differs from traditional Martial Arts in that I try to avoid unnecessarily complicated techniques that take years to master and which are often ineffective or inappropriate in actual self-defense scenarios. I focus instead on techniques that are simple and effective, and which are more appropriate for the average person. My style also differs from mixed martial arts ("MMA"), because many times MMA and other competition-oriented sports have the nasty tendancy of focusing only on what works in the ring. While it is true that MMA and similar styles are full-contact sports requiring training and experience, some of the drawbacks are created because it is exactly that--a sport. There are several rules and restrictions that prohibit certain strikes or techniques, or which allow other provisions to the fighters such as timed rounds, being "reset" in the center of the ring to prevent falling or having a referee to stop the fight in the event of a "failure to provide an intelligent defense". There are no rules in a real-life confrontation, no time limits, and no referees. The winner is the one who walks away. My style is also differant from many other so-called "self-defense" couses, in that "crash courses" in self-defense are too simplistic, too lengthy, or too aggressive for the average person. Many of these courses consist only of one class about an hour in duration, which often results in a rushed feel and techniques that are so rudimentary as to be ineffective in real-life confrontations. In short, such classes teach you just enough to get you into trouble, or to further aggravate your attacker. I use a structured training regimen that consists of Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced level classes; each course builds on the previous one to develop and hone the skills necessary to defend oneself in a real-life confrontation. I feel that this sort of training structure is necessary for anyone who wishes to be proficient in martial arts or self-defense. I do not harbor any illusions that my style is for everyone. It is not for people who may wish to focus exclusively on competition, nor is it for those who may want to destroy every part of their opponent's body like some sort of mindless killing machine. I feel my style is suited for the average person who wants the confidence to know that they are able to defend themselves in a rational, reasonable, and appropriate manner. So long as the weather permits, we currently hold classes outside our apartment. We have been speaking to the new manager about a potential studio space, which will be listed here once everything is confirmed. The first class is always free. Every subsequent class is $5.00 per person, per class. No contracts required! For more information, please contact me via e-mail. |
