Lord Kethor
Lord Kethor
Half-elf

As a young man, Kethor witnessed the slaughter of his entire family by Orcs as they traveled in the Northeasten mountains. This event forever marked Kethor, especially when fighting Orcs or any group known to harm families.

In the Cedrin Wars, Kethor distinquished himself in the armies of the Elf King as a great strategist and military genius. When the Elven Army chose to retreat to the southern island, Kethor chose to remain behind with a small band of elves, half-elves, and humans.

As the wars raged in the north, boiling over onto the Isle of Light, Kethor staged daring raid after raid on Orc outposts in the northern lands. His greatest battle occurred in the last days of the War, when Kethor led a band of twenty-eight against an encampment of Orcs being shipped south for reinforcements. His band killed over 400 Orcs that day and burned nearly twenty-eight tons of supplies.

After the War, Emperor Vandal personally recognized Kethor's bravery and granted him titles and land in the Lost Lands of the north. Kethor founded the only northern town still controlled by the Emperor. In his honor the people in and around the town named it after him and built his grand mansion. The statue was Kethor's idea.

Lady Limbid Sinlerion
Lady Limbid Sinlerion
Half-elf

Limbid Winery

Limbid is a nature priestess. She worships on new moons with a small group of local farmers, which she leads. Their faith is not well known or understood and she only discusses it with people who apparently have a desire for it. There is no compulsion from her diety to recruit just perform the rites that guarantee good and plentiful harvest.

This is Limbid's third attempt at establishing a winery. Her first attempt was on the Isle of Light, but the grapes fermented too quickly and the wine became dry and bitter. Her second attempt was in a neighboring town but an attack by Orcs burned all of her vines while stealing two years of work.

She has been in Kethor for almost two years and her wines are becoming famous on the Isle and in the neighboring towns. She has even sold a shipment to the Eastern Emperor and has a standing order for 20 barrels a year from him.

She is currently experimenting with using a small amount of the Pool of Thunder's water as an additive to her wines. It has drawn the attention of Nifril, who has agreed to let her take as much water as she needs so long as he gets a cask of Limbid Red each month. Limbid eagerly complies as the water makes her wine extremely clear and slightly sparkling. It is a big seller in Nestor's Inn but because of the price does not sell as well in the Blue Kettle, just outside Kethor's walls. She owns two warehouses on the docks, one for wines and other spirits and another for flamables.

Limbid and Lord Kethor have been seen wandering his gardens in the late hours of the evening, sipping a glass of Limbid Pale White.

Linzi, The Harbormaster
Linzi
The Sea Kestrel
Half-elf

Harbor Master

Linzi fled the destruction of the north aboard a ship with the elven army. He had fought for over a year and was bitterly disappointed that the elven king was taking the army to the Isle of Light.

When they landed, he vowed to not set foot on land until the war ended. He spent the next several months waging hit and run attacks on enemy shipping as it prepared to invade the Isle. When the invasion occurred, eleven shiploads of the enemy never made it - burned at sea by the Sea Kestrel.

Linzi was named the Sea Kestril because of the speed and savageness of his attacks. His men were fanatically loyal and many of them still serve him at the Kethor harbor.

The Gnome Bepril

Bepril, The Tanner
Gnome

When the old Empire was still thriving, fifty years before the Cedrin Wars, Bepril was tanning hides and selling them from his shop by Eadledane Creek. He watched them build the T'Warl Bridge twenty years later and the T'Warl Tower five years after that.

During the Cedrin Wars he sold to anyone who would pay his prices and most did - a good tanner is hard to find. Bepril makes quality boots, coats, and sadles and never mixes in local politics. Why should he? It will be the same thing in fifty years. Just the people will have changed

Mrs. Jiriada Biddle

Mrs. Biddle
Boarding House

Human

Mrs. Biddle will only admit to being over 30 but if the truth be known is actually 42. She has lived in the town since it was built by running a boarding house for visitors too poorly connected to be invited to Lord Kethor's house but also too wealthy to stay in a common inn. Her fees are reasonable - 1gp per week which includes breakfast. Over the last few months business has been slow because of the orc and bandit raids.

Before the Cedrin Wars, Mrs. Biddle was married to Elrid Biddle. Elrid acquired the deed to an iron mine in the Sifain Mountains which he opened two years before the start of the Wars. He was killed when a band of Drow elves used his mine to reach the surface.

Mrs. Biddle has one 16 year old daughter, Kyrandra, who works for Quelmic in the dry goods store.

Bredibol.gif (4876 bytes)

Bredibol
Vineyards

What can be said about Bredibol? He's a carouser and drunkard who won his orchard in a game of chance one drunken night in the Blue Kettle. The grapes he grows are not particularly memorable but the wines he makes from them certainly are. He always mixes his wines 3 parts wine and 1 part distilled grain spirits. It's a big hit in the Kettle as it only costs 1sp per tankard and most men can't drink more than 2 tankards. Bredibol himself currently holds the record at 11 tankards. His parties are legendary and even Lord Kethor and Lady Limbid have attended briefly on 2 different occasions.

He and Limbid are on quite friendly terms and each tries to outdo the other in making the wine with the most memorable flavor. Bred's Red is the current winner with the locals while Limbid's Pale White is a clear winner with the upper crust.

Furlt - Half-ogre Blacksmith

Furlt
Blacksmith Shop

Half-ogre

No one knows of Furlt's childhood years, but during the Cedrin Wars, Furlt worked as a blacksmith in an orc town. He made many weapons for the orc armies and believed it when they told him he was too ugly to ever be accepted in a human town. Then the adventurers came to town.

Led by a large man in glowing white armor, the group strolled into town killing every orc they could find. Most fled but Furlt was fascinated by the glowing armor. He could not imagine what process could make it glow and vowed to find out.

Hiding in some straw, he waited for the group to leave the town, then he crept out and followed. For almost a week he watched them but was unable to discover what made the armor glow. He did discover that not all humans hated things ugly when he watched the group healing some local leapers.

The next day, Furlt boldly strode into their camp and asked what made the armor glow. Startled at first, the group warmed to Furlt's wide-eyed wonder at the glowing Paladin. They tried to explain magic to Furlt but the concept went against everything he knew. Force was the blow of the hammer on steel not some mysterious thing to be manipulated by words.

At last convinced that he would never understand magic, Furlt left the band and joined Lord Kethor's raiders. He made and repaired arms and armor as they sought and killed the people who had lied to him. He dislikes orcs and will help Lord Kethor in whatever he needs to hunt them down.

His weapons are known for their sturdy, if unimaginative, construction. He also makes the local plows and shoes the local horses.

Greb, The Goatherd

Greb
Goatherd

Human

During the Cedrin Wars, Greb spent two long years in an orc labor camp. He was twice used as the target for experimental magic while there and, while he doesn't blame all magic users, he despises magic use in any form. He has been speared six times by orc and human raiders since moving to Kethor three years ago. Each time he refused to allow the priests of the temple to help him.

"I would rather die than feel the touch of magic on my skin once more."

Greb raises goats for the milk and cheese and during the summer wanders with them both east and north of the town. He will sell a goat but will not butcher one. It is rumored he raises goats because of the folklore of their milk going sour in the presence of magic.

When in town, Greb is often found in Nestor's bar playing a flute softly and telling tales of the brave men and women who never made it out of the labor camps. Later, as the drinks begin to warm him up, he will sometimes launch into Kanessa's Song or Vandal's Ballad. By the end of these great songs there is not a dry eye in the house, nor an unhappy guest. Nestor always pays Greb's bar bill.

Izmoth, Tax Collector

Izmoth
Tax Collector

Human

Nothing is known of Izmoth except he was appointed tax collector by Lord Kethor himself after the one appointed by the Emperor drowned after slipping from the dock following an evening at the Blue Kettle outside of town. His home is directly across the street from Lord Kethor's and the two can be seen walking the docks on Thirdday. Izmoth makes collections every Fifthday.

Izmoth is the wealthiest man in town, next to Lord Kethor of course. Once a month he ships all of the taxes he has collected to the Isle of Light. These are accompanied by sixteen of the Kethian guard and at least nine of Linzi's Raiders. It is uncertain where Izmoth gets his money as Linzi will be the first to admit that a great sum in tax moneys are delivered to the Isle each month.

Jalar Hogswain, Swine Herder

Jalar Hogswain
Swine Herder

Human

If asked why such a big fellow doesn't go out and make a name for himself, Jalar will say, "Jalar's father was a swine herd. Jalar's grandfather was a swine herd. Jalar's great-grandfather was a swine herd. When Jalar finds woman, his son will be swine herd too."

Hardworking. Honest to a fault. But dumber than two orcs faced with one piece of bread and no knife; Jalar has a reputation as the finest swine herd in history. It's almost as if he can talk with them and ask them what they need to grow big, fat, and strong. He is genuinely depressed each time he must butcher one of his hogs and always makes a small ankh which he places on the wall of his house in honor of the slain animal.

During the Cedrin Wars, Jalar's father sent him onto the southern continent. It is said the people there changed him somehow but he will not talk about it.

mandrar.jpg (3755 bytes)

Mandrar
Wheat Farmer

Human

Mandrar has made the mistake of falling in love with Limbid. He has further compounded his error by making his feeling known to her. Lord Kethor has baned him from entering the town proper and is looking for ways to revoke his Right of Property under the Covenents of Citizenry signed into law by the Emperor over three years ago.

Limbid has made it plain that she does not return his feelings, yet Mandrar persists in sending her presents - flowers and jewelry from neighboring towns. He has stopped tending to his wheat farm and only the diligence of his four hired hands has kept it going. They have completely taken over the farm's operation because Mandrar is constantly gone looking for ways to win Limbid's heart.

Twice he has approached Greb about composing some grand ballad to her beauty. Twice he has been refused.

Nestor, The Innkeeper

Nestor
Nestor's Inn

Human

Nestor served in the army during the last days of the Cedrin Wars under Lord Kethor. That's as close as he ever wants to get to combat again. He runs a peaceful inn. As he will tell you when you rent a bunk for the night, "If you can't keep it peaceful, keep it elsewhere."

One-half of a bunkbed - 1 cp per night (2 for specific half)
A single bed - 1 sp per night
Securing valuables in Nestor's safe - 1 sp per night

He purchases all of his beer and wines from Lady Limbid and always pays his taxes. Twice each month he donates an ox to the temple. He is the closest thing to a friend Nifril, the Chief Priest, has in this town. When asked why, he will just shrug his shoulders and say, "Every man needs a friend."

nifril.jpg (4135 bytes)

Nifril D'Laque

Chief Priest
Temple of Zeus

Human

Like so many others, Nifril fled the Cedrin Wars. Unlike so many others, Nifril refused to fight in the Cedrin Wars.

Before the Wars, Nifril studied at many Universities around the Empire. As the son of Prelate (provincial governor) D'Laque, Nifril had money, power, and influence. Prelate D'Laque was killed early in the Wars, his lands and estates burned. Nifril was at a University on the Isle of Light at the time and rumor has it his major concern was how he would continue his studies now that his family would not be sending him money.

Without money, Nifril became a Priest of Zeus and found he had a natural talent in organizing the temple. Working diligently since the Wars, Nifril has risen quickly within the ranks of the temple. Unfortunately, this rapid rise did not set well with the Chief Priest of the Temple on the Isle and he was sent to Kethor to learn humility, and some combat skills!

Nifril has organized the temple well, and each cleric within the differing orders has specific and assigned duties. Breaking from routine is punished severely, as is discussing anything about the temple with outsiders. Nifril maintains that if Zeus wanted the populace to know anything other than what the priests tell them, he would come down from Olympus and make it known.

Quelmic Glarstone, Dwarven Dry Goods Merchant

Quelmic Glarstone
Dry Goods Store

Hill Dwarf

Quelmic fled the same disaster as so many of his race, the Cedrin Wars, when a band of adventurers destroyed his people's underground caverns in search of weapons to fight the evil Elf. For a time, he joined with the human armies fighting the growing armies of Cedrin, but was always plagued by visions of the horrible battles to come. Finally, the visions became too much and he left the army.

He wandered the northern lands for a number of months, avoiding capture by listening to the warnings of his visions. Gradually he found he liked bartering things and began collecting items in his travels that he could sell to the desperate bands of refugees that were swarming to the port cities where they could book passage to the Isle of Light.

By the end of the Wars, Quelmic had amassed a sizeable amount of money, and perhaps even better, a sizeable amount of experience in getting goods from one place to another.

The Wars have marked Quelmic, however. As witness to the horror, and because of the horrible visions that plagued his every night, Quelmic has lost his compassion. Life is a commodity that can be bought and sold as easily as bags of grain. As such Quelmic has been instrumental in buying women from the northern towns and cities for sale on the Isle of Light, which has a desperate need. He knows the Emperor has not baned the trade because of this need but he also knows the law which requires a man to free a slave before marrying her. As long as he is paid he does not care.

Quelmic currently runs nine caravans to various towns and cities of the north. He owns most of the warehouses in Kethor and almost every type of good that comes into, or goes out of, the town, passes through Quelmic's hands.

Siwilri Lars
The Potter

Human

Siwilri is a bit of a local legend. Twice orcs have amassed an attack on the town and twice Siwilri has been captured. But he has managed to escape each time with only mild cuts and scrapes.

Siwilri has also been in a large feud with T'Fain, The Brickmaker for over two years. Both need the watery mud/clay from the banks of the Eadledane and neither has clear claim to it. Lord Kethor has decreed they must share the mud, but rumor has it he has placed a bet on Siwilri eventually gaining control.

Each blames the other for numerous acts of sabotage, including placing wood soaked in Greek Fire under Siwilri's kiln and setting fire to T'Fain's straw. Twice T'Fain's house has burned and three times the racks holding Siwilri's drying pots have collapsed.

Siwilri has two apprentices and keeps them busy constantly. Unfortunately they are kept busy watching T'Fain and not making pots.

Gaenynnis Teshford

Teshford Orchard

As a young man, Gaeny killed his best friend during a sword-fighting competition. They were both evenly matched and the fight was particularly fierce. Tired to the point of calling it a draw, the two made one last desperate lunge at each other. It is said the blades flashed as bright as Zeus's lightning bolts as the two sweating champions exchanged parry and thrust. Arms and legs trembling under the constant assault, Gaeny suddenly noticed an opening as his friend over-extended his sword. Stepping left, away from the man's sword-arm, Gaeny slashed at exposed chest. Unfortunately, his friend chose that moment to slip and fall forward. Gaeny's sword nearly cut the poor man's head off. Gaeny has never touched a weapon since.

In penance, Gaeny joined the Apolonian priesthood and wandered the land for over thirty years administering to the sick and injured. All he ever asked in return was a place to sleep out of the cold and a small portion of food.

When the Cedrin Wars started, Gaeny established a hospital for the sick and injured. He never asked which side his patients were on, helping all who came to him. A barbarian chieftain took advantage of that fact and slew every non-barbarian in the hospital. He then burned the hospital and took Gaeny captive. As the Wars raged around him, Gaeny was forced to help only his barbarian captors. He was also forced to watch the ritual torture and mutilation of countless prisoners as Cedrin's poisonous words began warping the religious ceremonies of the barbarian tribes.

Lord Kethor's Raiders rescued Gaeny two months before the end of the war. When Kethor returned to establish the northern settlement, Gaeny was the first to volunteer. Now old and frail from years of wandering and captivity, he manages to run the best apple orchard in 100 miles. Lord Kethor buys all his apples, all but the ones Gaeny gives away to the poor refugees that have been flocking to the relative safety of the area around Kethor. Gaeny lives a quiet life playing the lyre and tending to his trees. He will occasionally come to Nestor's Inn and play with Greb but these occasions are becoming less and less frequent.

T'Fain
The Brickmaker

Gnome

T'Fain was exiled from the northern town of Ghromesh, a gnomish settlement at the foot of the Sifain Mountains, for trafficking in gnome slaves. He managed to escape with quite a sum of money, or so the legend goes, and some believe this is why Siwilri is feuding with him. Some have gone so far as to suggest Lord Kethor has hired Siwilri to find T'Fain's treasure.

T'Fain has no apprentices but hires refugees to make his bricks. He pays them little and they give him what he pays for. T'Fain's bricks are not used locally but are sold to towns further east.

T'Fain himself is a bitter, shriveled old gnome that only leaves his home when his workers quit. Then he wanders to the refugee camp, promising great wages for only minor work. As the occupants of the camp change regularly and because they are mostly hungry and cold, many take up his offer, at least for a few days.
