| Being the comic book nut (say fanboy and die) that I am I was of course very, very, excited about this film. Finally, a big budget mainstream Marvel comic movie (Actually Blade came out before this, but Blade has never been a mainstream Marvel book) to rival DC's success with Superman and Batman. I knew this was going to be one of the best comic book movies ever made. Needless to say I was right. The movie is about Mutants, a genetic branch off the human species. People born as mutants have fantastic powers beyond those of normal people. These powers make normal people afraid and hateful of mutants. (typical humans fearing what they do not understand). The main plot of this movie is one group of mutants, the X-men, are trying to protect the humans that fear and hate them from another group of mutants called the Brotherhood. The X-men are led by a man named Charles Xavier (Wonderfully played by Patrick Stewart as the mutant Martin Luther King) and the Brotherhood are led by Magneto (Played to perfection by Ian McKellan as the mutant Malcolm X). Magneto believes that humanity will never accept mutants and must be forced too, while Xavier believes we can all get along. You got all that? The main part of this movie is the struggle between these two factions of thinking, with some interesting characters (and powers) thrown into the mix. Director Brian Singer (The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil) made this film visually stunning, funny, action packed, and true to the comics, but most of all he made you think about the real issue that this movie was about, Prejudice. The acting was very, very, good all round. This goes double for Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, and newcomer to American film, Hugh Jackman (as everyone's favorite bad-assed Canadian mutant Wolverine). The FX were awesome, it was great to see these famous characters and their powers come to life on the big screen. The only real downfall I had with this film was some of the dialogue. There were some lines in the film that were just so corny that you can't help but to groan. Luckily the great performances noted above really helped me overlook some of these cheeseball lines. Above all else this was a extremely fun, action packed, funny, and stimulating film that can be watched over again and over again. I highly recommend it. |
