| What can one say about a band that mixes ska, reggae, rap, bluegrass, and rock into the same package? You would say a lot if that band was The Urge. A St. Louis, MO local band gone HUGE, The Urge sells out shows around the country, and with good reason. The Urges newest album, Too Much Stereo, is much different than their earlier sound, and seems to highlight a positive outlook on life. The Urge is famous for their work with horns in songs, and this album is no exception with the horns becoming more subtle. The albums title track, Too Much Stereo, is all about listening to each other and getting past miscommunication. Other songs like What Is This, Liar Liar, and Four Letters and Two Words keep the pace light and fun, while keeping it rocking at the same time. They seem to be masters at mixing completely different aspects into one working package. Lead singer Steve Ewing is an incredible vocalist, with a style that shifts from fast and frenzied to mellow and melodic at the drop of a hat. Matt Kwiatkowski (trombone) does well blending his horn with the guitar sequences; and John Pessoni (drums, percussion, and background vocals) keeps pace with Ewing and Kwiatkowski at just the right moments. This reviewer highly recommends The Urge to anyone who enjoys good music. |
