The World Is Not Enough
By Len Berry
The latest adventure of the most famous agent of MI6James Bond, 007, (Pierce Brosnan), The World Is Not Enough, is a great, action-filled film. This time around, Bond starts out with a simple assignment: protect oil empire heiress Elektra King (Sophie Marceau) from a possible assassination attempt. Eventually, the assignment becomes one that Bond is used to getting: Save the world or at least the world as we know it.
Once Bond starts to get an idea of what is really going on, he finally runs into Renard (Robert Carlyle), the chaotic anarchist who, thanks to a bullet in his brain (OUCH!), can feel no pain. During this encounter, a nuclear physicist, Dr. Christmas Jones (Denise Richards) is thrown into harms way while Renard makes an attempt to steal a nuclear warhead. Jones and Bond are forced to then join forces to stop Renards sinister plan, which is.
Did you think I was really going to tell you that? If I did, that would blow the whole movie!
While fighting Renard and his legion of anarchists, Bond finds some help from the ever-popular Q Branch, featuring Desmond Llewelyn as retiring department head Q and John Cleese as Qs bumbling replacement, R. Help also comes in the form of Valentin Zukovsky (Robbie Coltrane), a character who previously appeared in GoldenEye.
The action sequences are great. Hey, you cant have a Bond movie without them, and, like in both of Brosnans other outings as Bond, The World Is Not Enough doesnt just deliver, but it REALLY DELIVERS. Everything from jumping out of buildings while making an escape attempt from local authorities to the somewhat obligatory Bond ski sequence (which is so cool) to massive battles in a *--OMITTED TO PRESERVE THE PLOT--*
There were a few really great performances. Q bows out in such a great way, I dont think the scene could have been written any better. Still, the veteran gadget maker gets to show off one last time at the expense of R, a character who can definitely keep alive the post of head of Q Branch, while still being a goofy, unpredictable manner typical of John Cleese. Robbie Coltrane does an excellent as Valentin, while Judy Dench once more excels as MI6 head, M.
To sum things up, The World Is Not Enough is loaded with action, has an interesting and unique story, performances that are solid, if not excellent in some cases, and is another good Bond film.
