What Women Want
By Len Berry
For years, I've known Mel Gibson was a talented actor, not just a cheesy action hero.  In What Women Want, he plays a chauvinist pig who has an accident giving him the ability to hear the thoughts of anyone of the opposite sex.  Eventually, using his gift, Gibson's character schemes to get rid of his business rival (Helen Hunt), and further his own sexual pursuits.
The performances were great from Gibson (his best yet) and Marisa Tomei, but I found Helen Hunts performance lacking, especially with the importance of her character.  The film was funny, but that seemed to peek off about halfway through, partially due to overexposure of the relationship between Gibson and Hunt.  This was so bad at points, it became repetitious.  This also hurt the better parts of the story--Gibson interacting with other, more interesting characters in the cast, especially a coffee shop waitress (Tomei).
My biggest problem with this film was the erratic storytelling, predictability, and melodrama that consumed the second half of the film.  What made it worse, was the fact the entire first half of the movie was done very well.  Too bad.
