| If Frank Capra were still making movies today, there is no doubt that The Majestic would be one of them. This movie has all the homegrown patriotism and small town ideals that made those movies such as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Its a Wonderful Life so special. Frank Darbont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) has directed a great film with just the right, blend of heart and comedy. The story is simple, yet strong. Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is a B-List screenwriter in the 1950s. When his name comes up before the House of Un-American Activities, he doesnt even try to defend himself despite the fact he is innocent. A freak car accident with a side effect of amnesia later puts Peter in a small California town that has been stricken with tragedy. It is there he is mistaken for the son of a local theater owner who had been missing since the war. With his new identity Peter learns what it is like to have courage and love. That is until his memory returns and the government finds him. Can he still have these things and be who he was before? This movie has some of the best acting I have seen all year. Jim Carrey gives his best performance (and to a degree channels Jimmy Stewart) as the hapless writer. If Carrey didnt deserve and academy award nomination before this film, he certainly does now. His performance in front of the Senate committee gives hope that everything will turn out right. Another Oscar worthy performance is from the great Martin Landau. His performance as the owner of the local theater and father to Peters mistaken identity, gives its share of laughs and tears. The Majestic may not be the best film of the year, but it still has a lot of heart and it is defiantly worth seeing. |
