Coyote Ugly
By Daniel A. Campisi
What do you get when you cross a bunch of beautiful scantly clad female bartenders and a (for lack of a better term) chick flick plot?  Well in this case you get a surprisingly entertaining film.  And yes, you read that correctly this movie is a chick flick.  So, sorry to disappoint all the men out there who saw the movie's preview and thought they were going to see a good old boobs and beer flick. And while there is actually plenty of beer and some very, very attractive women in the film, that's not what the movie about at all despite what the trailer looks like.
The film revolves around Violet (Piper Perbo), a naive` but good hearted New Jersey girl trying to make it in the big city of New York.  Unable to get a break or even get a decent job in the big, cold city, she is about to go back to Jersey when luck finally comes her way.  She meets the Coyotes, three bartenders from the wildest bar in all New York and it just so happens they will soon be in need of another girl.  Violet decides to become a Coyote and work at the bar until her music career takes off... if it ever will.         I liked this film, but I didn't love it.  It dragged at points, some characters weren't developed as well as they should have been and the story could have used another rewrite to clean up some bad dialogue. Even though the film had some flaws I was entertained none the less, and it did surprise me a couple of times.  For example, I was surprised to learn the film was not about the bar.  The bar in fact is just a minor subplot in the overall story.  They film also had some pretty good acting, especally on the part of  John Goodman as Violet's father.  Goodman's character was one of the better developed characters and pretty much stole the movie.  Also it was a fun flick, I came out of the theater with a smile on my face, because I had enjoyed myself.
So to sum up, if your expecting a beer and boobs flick, you'll be disappointed.  If you are expecting a great story and fantastic acting, you'll be disappointed.  If you are expecting to just go sit down and have fun, then Coyote Ugly is for you.
