Battlefield Earth
By Len Berry
Do you like Sci-Fi?  How about lots of action?  And what about using screen wipes to edit from one scene to the next?  If so, then Battlefield Earth may be the movie for you!
The latest John Travolta film has drawn a lot of bad press, but when I saw this film, I couldn't see why.  The movie had a lot of interesting characters and something of an interesting plot.
Speaking of which, sometime this year, a bunch of nine foot tall aliens known as Psychlos are going to take over the planet.  A thousand years from now humanity will be reduced to what the Psychlos call "man-animals" which are used for slave labor.  One human, Johnnie, who has just learned about the Psychlos is placed by one of their leaders, Terl (Travolta), into a learning machine.  Johnnie begins to organize a resistance, using Terl's greed to try and take back the planet.
Yeah, I know this sounds like a cliched plot, and it is, but this story is older than dirt, so what do you expect?
The fight scenes were good and realistic (a rare thing in Hollywood) and the acting was great.  The only problem I had was the rather large plotholes in the script.  One of these is a band of primative humans learning to fly Harrier jets ia a week, which is kinda hard to swallow.
Since so much of this film centers around the concept of "leverage," I'll say that as leverage to get you to watch:  The end of the film makes a great set-up for the sequel (they only used the first half of the book), if it ever gets made.
