American Beauty
By Daniel A. Campisi
"It's a wonderful night for an Oscar!  Oscar!  Oscar!  Who will win?"  Well since there appartently is justice in Hollywood (hidden in some deep dark crack, and only shows it's face at certain times during the century) American Beauty walked away with the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor awards.  Recently released on DVD in a special awards edition, I got to see this movie again for the second time.  And just like my old review, my reaction was still "Wow."  Why still wow?  Well because this was the first thing I said when the movie ended both the first and second time.
    This movie beat out both
Man On the Moon and Dogma for my choice of best film of 1999 in just a two hour time span.  This movie is funny and yet sad.  Depressing and yet uplifting.  Disturbed yet made complete sense.  I was amazed at how a movie could be all these things and not be a jumbled mess.  The acting was terrific (especally Best Actor Kevin Spacey, I swear the man could play a potato and make it an Oscar worthy performance).  The writing and direction were spectactular (Kudos to first timer Sam Mendes).  The story revolves around a typical disfunctional family who are trying to make sense of their screwed up lives.  I really can't say much more because you have to see this for yourself to understand how good it really is.  Words do not do it justice.
