7/19/03-I decided it was time to start building a faster antweight. I looked at some antweight parts, but decided I had what I needed to make the robot. The design will be a 4 wheel drive robot with the front wheels being slaved with pulleys to direct drive back wheels. I would use aluminum angle and sheet to for a frame/baseplate combination. The drive motors would be a pair of small 12V surplus motors from MECI and they would be controlled by a pair of ESCs I'm beta testing. The batteries would be alkaline. I'm really looking forward to the build.
7/20/03-Construction has begun on this speed demon. I spent an hour or so making a frame out of aluminum and sheet. Basically, I made a wider-than-long rectangle out of the angle, with the angles all facing out, similar to Sallad. I then lined up a pice of sheet metal that was cut to size so that I formed a pair of spaces along the sides for the wheels. I also made a pair of motor mounts and four pulleys using a wholesaw. The insides are the pulleys and the outsides formed the mounts. i did not get around to mounting.
7/21/030-A lot of progress was made today. I started by realizing that I didn't need bulky motor mounts in an antweight. I'll just ziptie the motors down. I drilled the center holes in the pulleys. I then slid the drive pulleys onto the motors. After, that, I did a little retro fit where I realized I had no room for wheels. I didn;'t want to start over, so I made a big decision. I decided I would just mount the direct-drive pulleys and free spinning pulleys and the belt connecting them could act as a wheel. I would make it with treads! I was all for it, as it makes this robot even more of a first for me. I mounted the stuff and got the free spinning pulleys to free spin. Then I went back and counter-sunk the bolts so that it would all fit nicely. Tomorrow will see a finished drivetrain if I'm lucky..
