Rules and Character Creation

Character Creation

I will use the "Players Options: Skills & Powers" and Core Rules from the Core Rules 2 CD Rom in creating all of these characters. the characters on "The Carefree Swords" page are the members of this party and are pretty much sealed in stone. Just look over that page and decide which character suits you best and which one you could bring alive in game. If for some reason none of those characters suit you, let me know what race/class combination you prefer. I will roll that character up and create him/her with the Core Rules CD Rom. I will then post that character to this site. If a character on the page is a female and you want it to be male, also let me know and I will fix that as well.

I do require that the kit and character either be indeginous of the Daleland, Dragoncoast or Cormyr area or be able to show in the history of your character how he arrived in the Daleland regions at 1st lvl. Also I'd like to ask you write at least a half-page to a one page history on your character. It can be as elaborate as you wish. Along with a paragraph description of your character as others would see him/her. This I will use to describe you to other party members and I will post the histories to this website to further embellish on your characters.

Spell Point System

I am new to the spell point system but am told it works better for online chatroom campaigns. For each spell you are able to memorize and or pray for, you get a spell point. Example: A 1st level cleric with an 18 wisdom can pray for 1 1st level spell and 2 more for wisdom bonus. Therefore he has 3 spell points. Anytime during gameplay he may spend 1 point and cast any 1st level clerical spell, except for restricted spheres. This makes since to me, because your Deity would give you the spells needed for the threats you would face. If it was a 5th level mage you would have 7 spell points, 4 points to cast any 1st level mage spell in your spellbook, 2 points to cast any 2nd level mage spell in your spellbook, and 1 point to cast any 3rd level mage spell in your spellbook. The time required to regain spell points would be the same needed to memorize/pray for the appropriate spell level.

Alignments

This is easy, NO EVIL ALIGNS. Anything from Chaotic Nuetral to Lawful Good is acceptable. Nuff said.

Combat & Rules

Chatroom

Most likely we will be playing in a chatroom on mIrc. I have a dicebot for this chat program. I will announce the #room name and game time before the campaign begins here and on the home page. We will be meeting once a week probably from 8am to 11am, sometimes as late as noon CST. The day will be up for debate by the players and DM. I figure most likely on Sundays. If you are a player and know you are going to miss or be tardy for a game session, send me an e-mail before the game. Two tardies/no shows with no e-mail and your out. Sorry, I have seen to many online chatroom campaigns go to (insert appropriate phrase) because players are late or no show.

Combat

A 1d10 will be rolled by each player, using the dicebot. Also you will roll for each attack seperately, you may have that round. Once you have rolled add weapon speed factor and dexterity bonuses and state your modified initiative to the DM. As your turn comes up the DM will tell you. You must state what action you will take prior to initiative roll. That means if you state you are going to attack with your sword and roll initiative, then you can not change your mind after initiative and want to try a called shot or parry. For spellcasters you can send the DM a private message of what spell you are going to cast prior to initiative roll, unless you want to say it on main channel where all the players can see. After initiative you can decide not to take the action, but you still lose a spell point for that spell. The DM will roll initiative for each monster seperately.

I will allow special manuevers (ie. parries, disarms, blocks, called shots, etc.) and they take up 1 attack you might have performed that round. Most special manuevers will be done at a -4 penalty to attack or a dexterity roll may be required. All damages done by players will be tallied by the DM. When you roll to attack, I will tell you if you hit or miss. After that you can graphically tell us in emotes how you attacked the monster. Then you roll for damage. Do not add your damage modifiers for strength, weapon pluses, etc.., the DM will add these in. Please keep your battle manuevers short because they do take up precious game time, but wouldn't be fun without them. All rolls by the DM, whether initiative, attack, etc. will be made off screen. This will speed up game and not leave a dicebot, which can be picky at times, deciding your fate. You can play a character very well and do great roleplay and a dicebot could still give monsters the luck of the die. Which would end your short glorious career. The object of the game is to have fun and I will try my best to keep it fun.

As far as discussion in the room, try and keep all OOC=Out of character comments to a minimum. If you say something OOC please double bracket the text. ie. ((AFK restroom, coffee run, etc.)) If you need to make a hidden movement then private message the DM. Examples of this would be a thief picking a pocket and he did not want the rest of the party to know or a spellcaster casting a spell. Everything said in the room will be treated as if your character said it unless it is bracketed. Many things do not need to be bracketed. If Borin the dwarf wanted to tell the DM he is going to search the drawers in a rotting desk then e-mote the action. "Borin searches the desk, looking for hidden compartments". Then the DM would come back with ((roll 1d6, etc.))

If these simple rules can be followed then game play can go on without interuption and it increases everyones fun. I also encourage Roleplaying. So if you have a dwarf and talk like: "I dun cheked dat rum o'er der an' it be empty." In other words be creative and have fun.

I am new to running campaigns over chatrooms, in fact this will be my first attempt. Many of these rules and ideas I garnered from many pages across the internet to give me an idea of how to run a campaign more effectively over a chatroom. So please be patient with me and I believe we can all have a wonderful experience in faerun together.
