6)  GRACE FINDS CHRIS AT MR. DIMITRIS HOUSE

(That evening, while Jessie visits her mother in the hospital,Grace visits Mr. Dimitris house unannounced.  Mr. Dimitri has a front door, but there is another entrance.  This entrance has an outer door, and a foyer with a glass door that opens up to Mr. Dimitris kitchen.)

Grace knocks at Mr. Dimitris glass door and waits.  Dimitri swings through an open doorway to the kitchen, holding a glass of red wine.  When he sees who it is he looks startled, but slides open the glass door.  Hey! Grace opens.  Dimitri exhales, What, what are you?  I was just(motioning to the outside)God, its (blows on hands) really cold!  She sweeps by Dimitri into his kitchen.  Uh-uh- Dimitri reacts.  Uh, no, I was just kind ofstuck (Dimitri closes the door and looks uncomfortably toward the hallway) in the neighborhood for a while, and theres something I wanted to tell you.  Dimitri interrupts, walking toward her.  And, and thats fine, but you see the thing is  No, please!  Grace puts her hands up to stop his interruption.  She takes a breath.  Please.  Just  Dimitri looks at her.  See, in your car the other day I just felt like there was this(Dimitri puts his glass down and touches his fingers against the green stone counter) connection, that I couldnt put into words, and then you put it into words.  You did it for me.  Dimitri walks a few steps along the counter, running his hand through his hair, troubled.  Look, I did something which I obviously shouldnt have done, okay, but Im glad I did it, because now I knowthat Im not alone!  Her voice breaks slightly.  Dimitris face softens.  Grace starts to move toward Dimitri.  And that, is such an amazing thingto know.  And

August! a womans voice calls out.  Graces gaze shifts to an Asian woman walking into the kitchen, stopping next to August.  Ahhh, Chris, he smiles awkwardly.  Chris eyes Grace.  Chris, you, you, this is Grace, one of my students.  Grace, this is.my friend, Christine Kim.  Grace tries to smile.  August puts his hand on the back of Chris shoulder.  Chris eyes Grace again.  August begins explaining, Grace is one of my most enthusiasticstudents.  She offered to, to chair the committee for the Gay/Straight Alliance dance.    Oh, right, you were telling me, Chris says.  Yeah, yeah.  Ohhh, the, the presentation, its tomorrow, isnt it?  Did I ever give you that memo?  Grace catches on.  No.  Hold, hold on.  I think its in my briefcase.  August leaves the room.  Grace attempts a smile.  Chris looks at Grace.  Would you like a soda or something? she says, picking up Augusts glass and carrying the two wineglasses past Grace, who is leaning against the sink, fiddling with her black overcoat.  No, thats okay.  Sooo, do you call him August, or Mr. Dimitri?  Chris sets the glasses down near some crackers.  Grace answers Mr. Dimitri.  Chris says I had a teacher in high school, he let us call himStacy.  Grace looks up, pained and mortified.  Chris keeps talking, her back facing Grace.  Which is a funny name for a man, but he was so cool we didnt care.  Grace continues trying to button up her coat.  Chris black bra shows through her semi-sheer black blouse, the tag visible.  So, is Mr. Dimitri a good teacher?  Hes okay, Grace says, still looking anywhere but at Chris.

August is in the next room.  He pulls the memo out of his leather bag, then walks by his bookcase.  He stops, seeing empty space where his book used to be.  August sighs, then looks toward the kitchen.

I just cant picture it.  Chris walks next to Grace, chummy.  I should come by sometime and watch him teach, just to freak him out.  Chris leans toward Grace, lightheartedly smiling.  Grace leans away slightly and forces a laugh.  She moves her hands up, which are now gloved, and says Um, I-I have to go.  I have to pick up my step-sister from the hospital, so.  Chris looks surprised.  Grace moves toward the door.

August enters the kitchen, holding up the memo.  Found it!  He walks up to Grace.  Hey, try to remember these things during school hours next time, okay?  Grace looks away, her hand behind her back, sliding the glass door open.  Mortified, she raises her eyes to Augusts.  He looks back at her, lifting his eyes slightly to hers.  Grace lowers her eyes, giving an embarrassed half-smile.  She takes the memo and turns away.  Ill see you tomorrow, Mr. Dimitri adds.  Nice meeting you, Grace! Chris calls out.  Grace shuts the outer door behind her.  August slides the glass door closed and turns, not smiling, uncertain.
