3-02  The Awful Truth (part 2)
Written by:  Winnie Holzman

D.  b/w of Grace reading the Baby Name book

Grace looks up August.  August, shortened form of Augustus.  Worthy of honor and respect.   She gives a strange look after reading this.

E. Grace says the thing shes most afraid of saying to Eli

Grace and Eli are in the kitchen.  Grace asks Are we afraid to be alone together?  Eli says no, and they make an appointment to talk the next day in his room at the same time.

F. No more Gracie

Lilys room/office.  Judy and Lily are arguing over Lilys resume and them working together.  Grace comes in with a message from the radio station about a job.  Lily says, Gracie, dont you have to write in your journal?  Grace answers And I kind of prefer Grace to Gracie.

G:  Grace tells Mr. Dimitri that she followed his advice.

SETTING:  Classroom.

Grace enters, beaming.  Mr. Dimitri is whistling again. Dimitri picks up a book
GRACE Mr. Dimitri.  I tried it.  What you said.  You know, about saying what youre most afraid to say to the person youre most afraid to say it to.
AUGUST I said that?
GRACE Yeah.
AUGUST Oh?  Hmm. Good.
GRACE Anyway, theres this person who I guess I was trying NOT to write about.
AUGUST Uh uh uh.  (walks by Grace)  No names!
GRACE No.  I know.  Its just this person is pretty much the most embarrassing person I could ever pick.  To write about.
AUGUST Sounds perfect.
GRACE Mr. Dimitri.
AUGUST (Leaving.)  I must away, fair Grace.
GRACE Oh. Okay.
AUGUST (Pauses at the doorway.)  You know who I think about a lot?  Proust.  Proust and Emily Dickenson.  I mean, they were so scared they never even left their rooms.  You dont have to become the bravest person who ever lived.  (Turns out lights.)  Just the bravest writer.

Note:  Mr. Dimitri sure smiles a lot!  :]  I get this impression hes late for a faculty meeting or something.

H: Grace visits Eli in his room

SETTING:  Grace visits Eli in his room   They make nervous small talk.  Grace asks Eli about his job.  They really struggle to have anything to talk about.  Eli doesnt really ask Grace about herself.  Grace leaves when neither can think of anything else to say.

Note:  See how this contrasts with Graces interaction with Mr. Dimitri.  Grace and Mr. Dimitri have no problem talking to each other.  Their conversation is unusually direct.  Well, on certain subjects.

I:  Grace writes in her journal

SETTING:  Grace goes to her room, frazzled by her visit with Eli.  She writes in her journal and laughs.
