| Sometimes what you're looking for is closer than you think.... |
| "Looking for Alibrandi" is the long awaited film adaption of Melina Marchetta's popular teen novel of the same name. Josie Alibrandi (Pia Miranda) is the 17 year old troubled vice-captain of an exclusive girls school in Sydney. Faced with the upcoming H.S.C exams, and the realisation that the boy of her dreams seems completely out of reach, Josie also has to deal with who she is. She is a wog, and a cursed one at that. Born out of wed-lock Josie is torn between her Italian heritage where she is "cursed" and the social cliques of her ellite school. The identity of Josie's father has remained a secret from everyone except Josie and her mother, Christina. Because of this Josie's Nonna, Katia, believes that the Alibrandi women are cursed. Josie is the vice captain at an ellite all girls catholic school in Sydney's eastern suburbs. Within this environment she feels like an outsider, attending on a scholarship. Because of her insecurities Josie is having problems with her feelings for John Barton, the school captain of the catholic boys college. He is rich, smart and has a promising future ahead of him. Unbeknownst to anyone is John's unhappiness. When Josie attends a combined school dance she begins a relationship with Jacob Coote the school captain of the local high school. When John commits suicide Josie is devestated, however it draws her closer to Jacob. He comes to mean something special to her and one of the most impotrant relationships in her life begins. When Josies father, Michael Andretti, arrives back in Sydney not knowing that he has a daughter, Josies world becomes even more complicated. As the two get to know eachother and develop a love that had been missing in both there lives Josie begins to discover herself. Josie's relationship with her Nonna is trying at the best of times. The main reason for this is her Nonna's treatment of Christina. When Christina became pregnant with Josie, Christina's father kicked her out of the house, and she was only able to return when he died. Josie figures out that Katia had an affair and that Christina was not really her father's child. When the truth is revealed the three generations of Alibrandi women are closer and Josie finally figures out where she belongs. |
