This page was designed to celebrate the wonderful material that is Balsa Wood! It's existence provides enjoyment to human beings both young and old.

Brief History: Balsa Wood mainly comes from the rainforests of central and south America and also from Ecquador. Its scientfic name is 'ochroma lagopus' and balsa is spanish meaning 'raft'. The trees grow from seeds which are scattered by the wind, and can reach a height or 100 feet after 10 or so years. The balsa business started during World War I when it was needed as a substitute for cork. Surprisingly, balsa is not the lightest wood in the world, but still it is often used for modelling.

Incredible Fact 1: By the time the trees are mature, there may be only 1 or 2 balsa trees per acre of jungle!

Incredible Fact 2: Only about 40% of the volume of balsa wood is solid substance!

Incredible Fact 3: Pound for pound, it can be stronger than Oak!

Things made of Balsa Wood:

1. The walls in Jepson's house.

2. The roof of Wrighty's car.

3. Allegedly, Bart Griemink's head.

4. Jez's old tennis racquet.

5. Jepson's kitchen/living room door.
