| Adolscent Suicide: What to do if a Friend Talks About Suicide |
| LISTEN Let your friend tell you how he/she is feeling. It's not helpful to give advice. Remember, what might help you to feel good might not work for someone else. You don't have to solve their problems, just listen and accept their feelings in an open and caring way. DON'T KEEP IT A SECRET Don't promise you won't tell anyone. If you keep the secret, you may lose a friend. GET HELP FOR THEM Encourage your friend to get help. Offer to go with them. If they refuse, let a trusting adult know about the situation. Tell someone with whom you feel comfortable. GET HELP FOR YOU Helping a friend through any crisis is stressful. You may need to share your feelings about it with someone you trust. Don't forget, no one is totally responsible for another person's life, but YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. |
