So wat's yer name, kid? *at the question, a slim girl of at the sink looks up from the skillet she's scrubbing* *in very careful English, with a hint of an accent* Lourdes Romany Doullet, but the man at Ellis Island called me Laura Dooley when I came through. I do not know why. *shrug*
You got a nick-name or was 'dat it? Zelly. Riot, I think, gave it to me. Because she says it was "always 'Zel this, and 'Zel that" when I first arrived.
Where you from, anyways? Mont-Saint-Michel, France. I was born in Lourdes the tenth of August, the year 1886. My family moved to Mont-Saint-Michel a few years later, which is why I am from there.
Whadd'a yah look like? *rinses the skillet and sets it aside to drain* Pieter says like a china doll, but he hasn't seen me in several months, since he went on voyage. Brunette hair, and blue eyes. *smiles brightly* And I have freckles now! From being outside without a hat so often. *aside from the freckles, rather does resemble a china doll, as she is petite and has an air of fragile innocence about her*
Got any 'ahhh, distin'guishin charact'ahristics? *blinking innocently* Is my accent not enough? *still occasionally slips a French word or two into her speech if she can't phrase something properly in English*
If you emptied out yah pockets on dis' table right now, watwould fall out? *pats her apron pocket with a soapy hand* There is nothing in here. Oh, but yes! In my skirt pocket I have change from when I went shopping this morning. And stamps I bought, for when I write letters.
How'd you find 'da place? I traveled here on the Alexandria in August of 1901. My uncle changed his mind about me living with him and Aunt Amelie as planned, but I had already left to come here. It was too late to inform me of this. After a bit of searching, with Pieter's help, she decided that here would be a good place for me to stay. And here I have been.
You drink, smoke, gamble... No, although I do know how to play cards. I am just not as good as the others. *pulls the sink plug and reaches for a towel to begin drying dishes*
Related tah any'badywe'd know? *curious* Would you know my aunt and uncle? Mr. and Mrs. Christophe Savard, of Gravesend. Or is it Flatbush? Or Bushwick? I can never remember... *gets lost quite easily, even after living here for three years, and has ended up in all three places* *the Savards actually live in Georgetown, Brooklyn*
Who's yah best friend? Pieter Zeeman. He's away on voyage right now. His last letter was from Jamaica. Daisy is a very good friend, too. She's the one who tutored me in English. *light laugh* Oh, and Riot, as well. I mustn't forget her.
Got any woyds tah live by? This is something my mother always told me. "Vous pouvez vous plaindre parce que les roses ont des pines, ou vous pouvez rejoice parce que les pines ont des roses." (You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have roses.)
